This dvd contains two films produced in Germany during the Nazi era, Die Deutsche Wochenschau and Der Hochtourist. The first, Die Deutsche Wochenschau, is a German newsreel which might have played in front of the feature film. The newsreel begins with footage of Hitler, Goring and Ribbentrop meeting Bulgarian dignitaries arriving at a train station. Then to Leningrad where German troops have crossed the Stalin canal and are attacking the city. Due to the extreme cold, German vehicles are being pulled by horses through the snow. Hundreds of Soviet prisoners march through the snow in front of the camera. A German officer throws a cigarette butt into the snow and several prisoners fight over the remaining tobacco. The newsreel then makes a detour to visit the Tolstoy museum somewhere in the vicinity of Leningrad. Then to Benghazi Libya, where General Rommel is cheered by dozens of Libyans as he enters the city. Captured British and Indian prisoners are shown walking in a column through the desert. Then to the American coast where a German U-boat is attacking an American freighter outside New York harbor. The U-boat is struck by an Allied depth charge and takes on water as it dives to avoid further Allied attacks. After the battle, the submarine's cook prepares fresh coffee and serves the U-boat's crew. In the feature film, Der Hochtourist, Lallinger a small town soap manufacturer goes on a long awaited vacation. While his family believes that he is climbing mountains, the soap manufacturer is actually drinking and dancing in a nearby city. However, Lallinger the manufacturer makes the mistake of writing letters to his family describing the healthy atmosphere of the Bavarian mountains. His wife is so proud of her husband's poetic skills that she decides to assemble his letters and take them to a publisher
