Castelli, e ponti di Maestro Niccola Zabaglia : con alcune ingegnose practiche ; e con la descrizione del trasporto dell'obelisco
Vaticano e di altri del cavaliere Domenico Fontana by
Nicola Zabaglia(
Book
)

Zabaglia was curator of the Reverenda Fabbrica di San Pietro, in which role he had responsibility for designing the machines and scaffolding used in the upkeep of the building. According to Comolli (III, p.305) Benedict XIV decreed that Zabaglia's 'ingenose machine' should be recorded, and Francesco Rostagni was commissioned to draw a series of plates, and G.G. Bottari (q.v.) to oversee their publication. The accompanying text was prepared by Lelio Cosatti (q.v.), working in collaboration with Zabaglia (who is thought to have been illiterate) and Bottari. Thus, although Zabaglia's name appears prominently on the titlepage, his responsibility for the text and plates was limited, and the work is more a celebration of his engineering skills, and of the Papal power that lay behind the maintenance of San Pietro. To the new plates, Bottari added reprints of 13 from Carlo Fontana's Templum Vaticanum (1694; No. 1096), which had been copied from Domenico Fontana's Delle trasportatione dell'obelisco Vaticano (Roma: Domenico Basa, 1590; Fowler 124). This was done partly in order to discuss the methods used by Fontana to move the Vatican obelisk in 1586, and partly to mark Zabaglia's repair of the obelisk in 1740, using 'a new type of scaffolding which was much admired' (see Erik Iversen's Obelisks in exile: volume one, the obelisks of Rome (Copenhagen: G.E.C. Gad, 1968), p.45). Comolli says that both the Latin and Italian texts were prepared by Cossati, although Robin Halwas notes that the Latin version was prepared by Nicolò Salulini (see Halwas 16, p.20)
