Betraying amnesia, portraying ourselves : video portraits by Latin American and Latino artists( Visual )

2 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The videos in this program invite the viewer to reconsider assumptions about regional and personal identity by offering a wide sampling of portraits; a group portrait, a street portrait, a family portrait, a self-portrait, a portrait of portraiture, and even a non-portrait. The diversity of these representations is as broad as the cultural and historical circumstances that have shaped the many cultures within Latin American and US Latino/a communities. This particular group of video makers have politicized their work by visualizing these unique geographical characteristics and by forging links between self, history, and memory. The exploration and experimentations represented in Betraying Amnesia constitute a politically charged and significant contribution to what we know as video portraiture

Chelpa Ferro by Chelpa Ferro (Artistic Group)( Visual )

2 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in Portuguese and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Founded in 1995 by visual artists Barrao and Luiz Zerbini, and by film editor Sergio Mekler, Chelpa Ferro explores the plasticity of the sound in sculptures, objects, installations, and performances that challenge the senses of the viewer. In the sixth documentary in the Videobrasil Authors Collection series, director Carlos Nader portrays the group as it assembled the Totoro sound object, at the Sao Paulo Art Gallery, and the Jungle Jam installation, at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, as well as through the presentation of the deconstructed opera A autopsia da cigarra gigante, at Teatro Oi Casa Grande, in Rio de Janeiro, all in 2008. Reflections by the artists and excerpts from previous works, such as Acqua Falsa (2005), presented at the Venice Biennale, and the Estabilidade provisoria installation (2005), at Fundacao Eva Klabin, reveal the restlessness and sense of humor that underlie their production

"Trailblazing novel for its innovative language and characters, both derived from Internet lingo. As if copied and pasted, the crypto-language practiced by Internet users in Brazil is used to interesting effect in this cybernovel. Between the parody and the burlesque, narrative challenges the reader's sense of boundaries and may foreshadow a confusing future for personal communication in the 21st century"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58
