Set in Paris in 1919, this fictional drama portrays Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, focusing on his relationship with women and his friendships in his last years of life, as well as his rivalry with Pablo Picasso. Modigliani, a Jew, was in love with Jeanne, a Catholic girl. The couple's illegitimate child is sent by Jeanne's father to a convent to be raised. Modigliani's self-destructive lifestyle and lingering painful memories from childhood threaten his relationships and success. Desperate to prove himself to Jeanne and to regain his child, Modigliani enters Paris' annual art competition to try to win the prize money. Neither Modigliani, nor his friend, Pablo Picasso, have ever entered the competition, thinking themselves above it. Yet when both rival artists enter along with other Bohemian artist friends -- Utrillo, Soutine, and De Rivera, Paris watches as the artists struggle to create a winning masterpiece
