[The Combat myth : two Gallipolis]( Visual )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

These two films made fifty years apart use the defeat at Gallipoli as the culmination of the drama. Another parallel is male friendship at the centre: between a country and a city boy in Gallipoli (1981), and between two upper-class boys in Tell England (1931). The Australian relationship is more obviously overlaid with myth - Anzac anti-British sentiment and purity of mateship. Patronising class attitudes and stiff-upper-lip mythology in Tell England yields to the reality of combat in line with the pacifism prevailing at the time. In contrast to the often stilted dialogue scenes, combat in Tell England is portrayed with a rough authenticity; in Gallipoli combat is aestheticised
