"The vision of the Friends of Grain Elevators is for a new and unique attraction - the National Grain Industry Activity Centre - that will be a landmark on the Thunder Bay waterfront. The Centre will preserve all aspects of the story of grain and the rich history symbolized by the massive grain elevators that punctuate the landscape and lakescape of the City of Thunder Bay. Lord Cultural Resources led a Feasibility Study to develop a concept for the new Centre and recommend programming strategies, facility size, staffing complement, and operational needs. Our study developed an exciting conceptual framework for the Centre and realistic attendance and financial estimates."--Lord Cultural Resources website desc

Since the release of the report in 2007, the file remained largely dormant until early 2010, when members of the organization again approached the Tourism Division to discuss next steps for the project. Tourism Division staff have recommended that the proponents discuss the project's suitability as a federally operated heritage site directly with the relevant federal agencies as a first step in identifying future options. Staff have recommended, however, that separate from the Centre's development, they should pursue modest opportunities to pursue alternative programming opportunities and expand upon the interpretive values of the grain industry through public venues in which to showcase the history that could serve to improve visitor retention without the large capital and operating risks."--Ctbpub.thunderbay.ca [Corporate Report ; DEPARTMENT/ Community Services ; DIVISION Tourism REPORT NO. 2010.215 ; DATE PREPARED October 19, 2010 FILE NO. 10.4 ; MEETING DATE November 8, 2010 ; SUBJECT Grain Elevator Activity Centre]
