As the city descends into violence, Mario a civil servant employed in the city morgue, initiates a doomed love affair with a beautiful nightclub dancer. In the days following the military coup that took place on September 11th 1973, the city morgue begins to overflow with the cadavers of trade unionists and socialists executed by General Augusto Pinochet's troops. The bodies of men and women cover the morgue's stairways, halls and every available stretcher, there is simply not enough room to store them. Unable to properly document the truckloads of corpses arriving hourly, Mario and his colleagues resort to a triage system where an identifying tag and a record of the number of bullet wounds replaces traditional autopsy procedures. After witnessing the autopsy of president Salvador Allende's bloodied corpse, one of Mario's colleagues finally breaks down and can no longer continue the gruesome body count. Dozens of corpses surround her feet while she demands that the military officers in charge explain when the killings will end
