Lodoiska is an 'escape' opera, a genre that became increasingly popular after the French Revolution. Lodoiska (soprano) is a Polish princess who had been betrothed, with the approval of her father Prince Lupanski (spoken), to Count Floreski (tenor). After the count opposed the prince in a political matter, the prince withdrew his consent and sent his daughter into hiding with Baron Lovinski (spoken). Floreski and his servant Varbel (baritone) search for Lodoiska and fall in with Kera Khan (tenor), who with his Tartars is preparing to attack the baron's castle. Floreski and Varbel gain admittance as messengers from the prince, but their deceit is discovered because the prince himself arrives. When Lodoiska tells her father that Baron Lovinski has treated her badly, Lovinski seizes all the visitors. Kera Khan and his Tartars storm and burn the castle and free the captives. Floreski rescues Lodoiska from the flames and the lovers are united with the prince's approval
