Artists in exile : expressions of loss and hope by Frauke Josenhans( Book )

7 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 208 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This timely book offers a wide-ranging and beautifully illustrated study of exiled artists from the 19th century through the present day, with notable attention to individuals who have often been relegated to the margins of publications on exile in art history. The artworks featured here, including photographs, paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture, present an expanded view of the conditions of exile-forced or voluntary-as an agent for both trauma and ingenuity. The introduction outlines the history and perception of exile in art over the past 200 years, and the book's four sections explore its aesthetic impact through the themes of home and mobility, nostalgia, transfer and adjustment, and identity. Essays and catalogue entries in each section showcase diverse artists, including not only European ones-for example, Jacques-Louis David, Paul Gauguin, George Grosz, and Kurt Schwitters-but also female, African American, East Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern artists, such as Elizabeth Catlett, Harold Cousins, Mona Hatoum, Lotte Jacobi, An-My Le, Roberto Matta, Ana Mendieta, Abelardo Morell, Mu Xin, and Shirin Neshat.00Exhibition: Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, United States (01.09. -31.12.2017)

Wissenschaft, Sentiment und Geschäftssinn Landschaft um 1800 by Roger Fayet( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in German and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Hans Richter was a central figure in the avant-garde for more than 50 years. This book examines the ways in which these "encounters"--To use Richter's own term--with other artists engendered creativity, originality, and meaning throughout his career. Including a chronology and Richter's first complete filmography in English, this volume sheds light on the relationships between modernism's most experimental artists, movements, and generations. Author, Timothy O. Benson with Contributions by Doris Berger, Edward Dimendberg, Philippe-alain Michaud, Michael White, and Yvonne Zimmermann"--
Hans Richter. Begegnungen by Hans Richter( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in German and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The oeuvre of Hans Richter (1888-1976) spanned nearly seven decades. Born in Berlin, he was one of the most significant champions of modernism. Berlin, Paris, Munich, Zurich, Moscow and New York were the major stations of his life. He was a painter and draughtsman, a Dadaist and a Constructivist, a film maker and a theoretician, as well as a great teacher. His great scroll collages remain icons of art history to this day. His work is characterised by a virtually unparalleled interpenetration of different artistic disciplines. The link between film and art was his major theme. Many of the most famous artists of the first half of the twentieth century were among his friends. ‘Hans Richter: Encounters from Dada to Today’ is the title of one of his books, which appeared in the 1970s. In post-war West Germany it was preceded by a rediscovery of this significant artist, who was hounded by the Nazis and whose work was shown as part of the infamous ‘Degenerate Art’ exhibition of 1937. Now, for the first time since the 1980s, an exhibition is being dedicated to this great Berlin artist in his native city. It includes over 140 works, including his major films and some fifty works by artists whom he influenced. Hans Richter worked with multimedia in an era when this term hadn’t even been invented. He regarded film as part of modern art. ‘The absolute film opens your eyes to what the camera is, what it can do, and what it wants.’0Exhibition: Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin, Germany (27.3.-30.6.2014)

Provence and the British imagination by Massimo Bacigalupo( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although it resonates today with lavender fields, sunny heritage locations and the gentrified memory of Paul Cézanne’s pictorial turbulence, Provence has not always been the attractive territory of pacified leisure and festival culture. Since the seventeenth century, indeed, the region has inscribed its shifting geography, complex politics and the extraordinary diversity of its land and seascapes in the perception and imagination of British visitors. In the steps of anonymous or excellent travellers, the chapters of this volume chart some of the most significant moments in the intercultural transactions between the proud linguistic and literary distinctiveness of the province on one hand and the always challenged and sometimes baffled perception of Anglophone (and Anglophile) visitors on the other. Spanning across two centuries, from the largely unknown pre-revolutionary Provence visited by John locke and Tobias Smollett through the Victorian paradise of popular tourism and finally to the more secret ‘homeland’ of Modernists, this volume reveals an unexpected Provence which, in oblique and complex ways, has long held a mirror to British culture and often acted as the laboratory of its artistic life

Avant le Sud, la Provence vue par les peintres allemands (1768-1867) by Frauke Josenhans( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Provence is not a destination traditionally associated with German painting. Yet, this region has attracted painters from the eighteenth century onwards. Roman remains and the memory of Petrarch make it a stop on the Grand Tour and on the Kavalierstour. German artists, who were going to Italy in large numbers, paid increasing attention to the South of France by the end of the eighteenth century. The reasons that motivated them to undertake such a voyage were varied: for painters such as Jakob Philip Hackert, it is a station on the way to Italy that gives them a foretaste of the peninsula. Johann Georg von Dillis and Ludwig Richter go to the South of France at the beginning of the nineteenth century as part of princely travels. Then, in the middle of the century, Johann Wilhelm Schirmer makes the conscious decision of touring Provence in search of natural scenery different from Italy's. The present study aims to establish a body of work documenting the presence of German artists in the South of France, and also to identify what motivated the journey, in order to demonstrate how their perception of Provence evolved from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. The aim is to analyze the place of this region in artistic, cultural and literary history, and to identify the visual and literary sources that German artists could rely on during their voyage. The different case studies serve to demonstrate the evolution of the Germanic artistic gaze on Provence, and to illustrate the difficult entry of this territory into the canons of the period, which is particularly notable in the context of German painting
