Palme d'or au festival de Cannes, objet d'un véritable scandale à sa sortie, première rencontre entre Federico Fellini et son "alter ego" Marcello Mastroianni, "La Dolce Vita" (1960) marque un tournant esthétique dans l'œuvre de son auteur. Pour Antoine de Gaudemar, de nombreux témoins (Anouk Aimée, Antonio Tabucchi...) se souviennent de ce film mythique, récit de l'errance d'un journaliste "de fête en fête, de nuit en nuit et de femme en femme". Pour son 7e film, Fellini abandonne la veine néoréaliste de ses débuts et affirme son "envie de vivre dans le faux" (Dominique Delouche, assistant du cinéaste). Il tourne en grande partie à Cinecittà où des rues de Rome sont reconstituées, et délaisse les codes de narration classique pour privilégier l'observation d'un microcosme : la jetset romaine à une période où la capitale italienne est devenue un haut lieu du show-business international. L'historien Julien Neutres révèle d'ailleurs que la plupart des séquences trouvent leur origine dans les frasques rapportées par la presse à sensation de l'époque. Pourtant Fellini "ne juge pas" (Tabucchi). "La Dolce Vita" accompagne dans une longue déambulation nocturne des personnages vivant dans "l'acceptation du pêché", selon les mots du cinéaste, mais sans jamais en faire le procès. C'est cela, sans doute, qu'une partie de l'opinion ne pourra accepter (l'Église notamment), certains réclamant même la destruction pure et simple du négatif. (Jaquette)
