Experimental results with handwritten character recognition (digits and letters extracted from handwritten addresses) are presented. The experiments are with two different representations of characters : binary pixel arrays and structural features represented as binary vectors. With pixel arrays, the backpropagation model performs better than the first-order Bayes discriminant that assumes statistical independence between pixels. With structural features, the first-order Bayes and backpropagation have similar performance. However, training of a backpropagation network is much more involved. Inherent difficulties with both classifiers are discussed."

New Spectroscopic Data of Erbium Ions in GaN Thin Films( Book )

Optical properties of erbium ions in MBE-grown GaN-thin films are reported. Three types of sites were identified using site selective laser excitation. The main center is ascribed to the Er3+ ions substituted in the Ga sub-lattice while the two other centers are assigned to Er-related defects. The lifetimes of the 4S3/2 and 4I13/2 multiplets of the main center are strongly quenched with increasing Er concentration. The complex decay profile of the visible fluorescence and its concentration dependence were modeled and interpreted using the diffusion-limited model. The dynamics of the infrared emission at 1.54 m from the 4I13/2 multiplet after excitation in the visible range is discussed. The crystal field strength of Er3+ in GaN was deduced from the overall crystal field splitting of the ground multiplet. Comparison of the results with those obtained in inorganic materials indicates that the rare earth is well embedded in the semiconductor host and not in a impurity oxide phase

Optimum Er Concentration for In situ Doped GaN Visible( Book )

GaN thin films have been doped with varying Er concentrations (0.01 -10 at.%) during molecular-beam- epitaxy growth. As expected, the visible and infrared (IR) emissions, from photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL), are a strong function of Er concentration. We report on the determination of an optimum Er doping level for PL and EL intensity. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering measurements showed that the Er concentration in GaN increased exponentially with Er cell temperature. PL and EL intensity of green emission at 537 and 558 nm, due to Er 4f-4f inner shell transitions, exhibited a maximum at ~1 at.% Er. IR PL intensity at 1.54 mm, due to another Er transition, revealed the same maximum for ~1 at.% Er concentration. PL lifetime measurements at 537 nm showed that samples with Er concentration <1 at.% had a lifetime of ~5 microsecs. For Er concentration>1 at. %, the lifetime decreased rapidly to values below 1 microsecs. This concentration quenching is believed to be due to a combination of Er cross relaxation and energy transfer to GaN defects, eventually followed by precipitation. This conclusion is supported by x-ray diffraction measurements. As a result, we have determined that the optimum Er doping concentration into GaN is ~1 at. %
Effect of Optical Excitation Energy on the Red Luminescence of Eu(3+) in GaN( Book )

Photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectroscopy mapped the photoexcitation wavelength dependence of the red luminescence [(sup 5 D sub 0 to (sup 7 F sub 2d)] transition from GaN:Eu. Time-resolved PL measurements revealed that for excitation at the GaN bound exciton energy, the decay transients are almost temperature insensitive between 86 K and 300 K, indicating an efficient energy transfer process. However, for excitation energies above or below the GaN bound exciton energy, the decaying luminescence indicates excitation wavelength- and temperature-dependent energy transfer influenced by intrinsic and Eu(3+)-related defects
