Sans moi by Marie Desplechin( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in Chinese and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Breakfast with Lucian : a portrait of the artist by Geordie Greig( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in Chinese and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For ten years Geordie Greig was among a very small group of friends who regularly met Lucian Freud for breakfast at Clarke's restaurant on Kensington Church Street. Over tea and the morning papers, Freud would recount stories of his past and discuss art. It was, in effect, Freud's private salon. In this kaleidoscopic memoir, Greig remembers Freud's stories: of death threats; escaping from Nazi Germany; falling out with his brother Clement; loathing his mother; painting David Hockney; sleeping with horses; escaping the Krays; painting the Queen; his controversial role as a father; and why Velazquez was the greatest painter. It is revelatory about his art, his lovers, his children, his enemies and his love of gambling. Freud dared never to do dull, speaking candidly of dancing with Garbo as well as painting Kate Moss naked

Computational properties of unconstrained linear distributed model predictive control by Shuning Li( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Typical chemical plants are large-scale systems composed of a number of processing units, which are integrated with each other via material, energy and information flows. To achieve optimal plant operation, various control strategies have been developed. Although centralized control provides the best performance, its fragile fault tolerance makes it impractical to implement. In industrial practice, such large-scale systems are operated by decentralized controllers, which do not have the implementation problems of centralized controllers; however, the decentralized controllers, in general, most often give suboptimal performance and may lead to loss of closed-loop stability. These concerns motivate the recent interest in the development of distributed control schemes, particularly distributed model predictive control (DMPC). DMPC methods are applied to existing decentralized control networks and aim to bring their control performance closer to the centralized performance. Often iteratively, the local controllers in a distributed control network communicate with each other or a coordinator to adjust their actions. Since interactions between subsystems can be taken into consideration via information exchange, DMPCs are able to improve decentralized performance or even reproduce the centralized performance. Nevertheless, iterative communication also implies that DMPCs may have high computational and communication costs, which are seldom studied in the literature. The focus of this thesis is the computational properties, mainly convergence and computational complexity, of two linear coordinated DMPCs: prediction-driven coordinated DMPC and price-driven coordinated DMPC. First, by restricting the study to linear unconstrained systems, the DMPC algorithms are transformed into iterative forms. Subsequently, explicit expressions for their convergence accuracy, convergence rates and the computational complexities are derived. A series of numerical experiments were also conducted to study the two DMPC methods' empirical computational complexity. It was discovered that DMPC methods' computational load is closely related to the local MPC design as well as factors like size and number of subsystems

Three-dimensional image analysis for quantification of tooth movements and landmark changes by Shuning Li( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Quantification of treatment outcomes (tooth displacement and bony changes) is the key to advance orthodontic research and improve clinical practices. Traditionally, treatment outcome were quantified by using two-dimensional (2D) cephalometric analysis. However, there are problems inherent in 2D analysis, such as tracing errors and inability to detect side-effects. Thus, a reliable three-dimensional (3D) image analysis method for treatment outcome quantification is of high interest. Systematic 3D image analysis methods were developed for digital dental cast models and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) models. A typical analysis procedure includes image reconstruction, landmarks identification, coordinate system setup, superimposition, and displacement or change calculation. The specified procedures for maxillary teeth displacements and anatomical landmarks movements were presented and validated. The validation results showed that these procedures were accurate and reliable enough for clinical applications. The 3D methods were first applied to a human canine retraction clinical study. The purposes of this study were to quantify canines and anchorage tooth movements, and to compare two commonly used canine retraction strategies, controlled tipping and translation. The canine results showed that (1) canine movements were linear with time; (2) the initial load system was not the only factor that controlled the canine movement pattern; and (3) control tipping was significantly faster than translation. The anchorage tooth results showed that (1) anchorage losses occurred even with transpalatal arch (TPA); (2) there was no significant difference in anchorage loss between the two treatment strategies; and (3) compared with removable TPA, fixed TPA appliance can significantly reduce the amount of anchorage loss in the mesial-distal direction. The second clinical application for the 3D methods was a mandibular growth clinical trial. The purposes of this study were to quantify skeletal landmark movements, and compare two widely used appliances, Herbst and MARA. The results showed that (1) the Herbst appliance caused mandibular forward movement with backward rotation; and (2) the treatment effects had no significant differences by using either Herbst or MARA appliances. The two clinical applications validated the methods developed in this study to quantify orthodontic treatment outcomes. They also demonstrated the benefits of using the 3D methods to quantify orthodontic treatment outcomes and to test fundamental hypotheses. These 3D methods can easily be extended to other clinical cases. This study will benefit orthodontic patients, clinicians and researchers

Triple oxygen isotope distributions in meteoric waters, plant waters and laboratory precipitated calcite by Shuning Li( )

in Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Triple oxygen isotope variations in meteoric waters demonstrate kinetic fractionation effects in hydrologic and biogeochemical cycles on the Earth surface. Recent advances in the ability to measure small differences in the deviation from expected relationships between 18O/16O and 17O/16O ratios (17O-excess or Δ17O) in waters and minerals provide the opportunity to extend the utility of triple oxygen isotopes to hydrologic and paleoclimatological studies. The major objective of this thesis is to explore the variation of triple oxygen isotope deviation in meteoric and plant waters and its response to different kinetic fractionation processes that are functions of environmental conditions. The first detailed study in this thesis reports on the variation in Δ17O of tap waters from the U.S. and provides a predictive map for Δ17O of meteoric waters in the United States. This is the first continental-scale study of variation in Δ17O of meteoric waters and it documents the influence of latitude on Δ17O of meteoric waters. The second study explores triple oxygen isotope fractionation associated with evapotranspiration by presenting new Δ17O data on plant waters from central Kenya and comparing these data to modeled results. This chapter provides a framework that will facilitate a more accurate view of the Δ17O variation in plant waters that contribute to triple oxygen isotope variations in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. Lastly, the thesis includes Δ17O data from an experimental study on synthetic carbonates that was performed to evaluate triple oxygen isotope fractionation during the precipitation of calcite from water. In sum, this dissertation provides a suite of baseline datasets that will be critical for interpreting triple oxygen isotopes in water and geologic materials in studies of environmental conditions on the past and present Earth
