The Great American Dream Machine( Visual )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Broadcast on public television from 1971 to 1973, The Great American Dream Machine was television's original satirical variety series. Unlike anything seen on public television before, the often controversial show made its mark across two highly successful seasons as a spirited magazine combining disparate elements such as animation, drama, musical performances, documentary and political commentary in an 'experimental' format; commentators dubbed it the intellectual Laugh-in ... Though it featured an astounding cast of actors, comedians and contributors who'd go on to far greater fame--including Chevy Chase, Albert Brooks, Charles Grodin, Penny Marshall, Martin Mull, Henry Winkler and many others--it only lasted for two seasons, in part due to attacks from the conservative right. However, today, the show's DNA can be seen in every satirical TV show that followed--from Saturday Night Live and SCTV to The Daily Show"--Container

The late Paul Jacobs was a reporter who had been investigating the high incidence of cancer in a community in southern Utah, not far from the atomic test sites in Nevada. Following up an initial suggestion made by Dr. Linus Pauling, he spent some 20 years uncovering various examples of negligence and subsequent attempts to cover up the evidence on the part of the authorities, notably the way in which soldiers had been exposed to radiation in the early fifties. The film examines the evidence and goes on to present instances of exposure to low-level radiation in other areas. It traces Jacobs' findings, interviews both ordinary people and some of the experts involved, and talks to Jacobs about his attempts to bring the issue into the open. Paul Jacobs died in January, 1978. He was the victim of lung cancer, possibly contracted during his visits to the Nevada test sites. People learn to hold back basic needs and feelings which they have been taught to be inappropriate.
