Innovation development for highly energy-efficient housing : opportunities and challenges related to the adoption of passive houses by Erwin Mlecnik( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1,523 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In previous years we have seen a recognition of the significant potential that exists for reducing energy use through innovation in residential buildings. This study investigates innovation challenges and identifies opportunities that could lead to a rapid increase in the adoption of highly energy-efficient housing concepts, particularly that of the passive house. To this end, it exemplifies, interprets and develops the innovation adoption theory through an investigation of views and experiences on the supply side, the demand side and the policy side. It highlights successful innovation trajectories and barriers experienced by businesses. It addresses both problems and positive experiences from the perspective of the end user and investigates different policy approaches. As such, the research reveals important features of innovation-adoption strategies in the building sector. It shows how multi-player enterprise collaboration plays a key role, and the study also recommends the development of quality assurance schemes. It makes a valuable contribution to discussions about how active the role of government policymakers and enterprise networks should be."--Cubierta
HealthGrid applications and technologies meet science gateways for life sciences by HealthGrid 2012( )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 1,517 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The integration of grid, cloud and other e-infrastructures into the fields of biology, bioinformatics, biomedicine, and healthcare are crucial if optimum use is to be made of the latest high-performance and distributed computer technology in these areas. Science gateways are concerned with offering intuitive graphical user interfaces to applications, data, and tools on distributed computing infrastructures. This book presents the joint proceedings of the Tenth HealthGrid Conference and the Fourth International Workshop on Science Gateways for Life Sciences (IWSG-Life), held in Amsterdam, Netherlands in May 2012. The HealthGrid conference promotes the exchange and debate of ideas, technologies and solutions likely to promote the integration of grids into biomedical research and health in the broadest sense. The IWSG-Life workshop series is a forum that brings together scientists from the field of life sciences, bioinformatics, and computer science to advance computational biology and chemistry in the context of science gateways. These events have been jointly organized to maximize the benefit from synergies and stimulate the forging of further links in joint research areas. The book is divided into three parts. Part I includes contributions accepted to the HealthGrid conference; Part II contains the papers about various aspects of the development and usage of science gateways for life sciences. The joint session is recorded in Part III, and addresses the topic of science gateways for biomedical research. The book will provide insights and new perspectives for all those involved in the research and use of infrastructures and technology for healthcare and life sciences
Digital enlightenment yearbook 2013 : the value of personal data by Mireille Hildebrandt( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1,497 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The value of personal data has traditionally been understood in ethical terms as a safeguard for personality rights such as human dignity and privacy. However, we have entered an era where personal data are mined, traded and monetized in the process of creating added value - often in terms of free services including efficient search, support for social networking and personalized communications. This volume investigates whether the economic value of personal data can be realized without compromising privacy, fairness and contextual integrity. It brings scholars and scientists from the discipli
Patient safety informatics : adverse drug events, human factors, and IT tools for patient medication safety by Vassilis Koutkias( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1,496 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Improving patient safety and the quality of healthcare poses many challenges, and information technology (IT) can support the measures necessary to address these. Unfortunately, the risk of adverse drug events (ADEs) rises alongside the increasing sophistication of the health IT systems incorporated into hospital environments. These pose a risk to the safety of patients and incur considerable extra healthcare costs. Approaches introduced to eliminate ADEs raise a number of concerns, not least that the successful transferability and use of such tools into real clinical settings is only possible
Rehabilitation : mobility, exercise, and sports : 4th International State-of-the-Art Congress by L. H. V. van der Woude( )

2 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 1,489 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a collection of summarized papers and poster presentations from the 4th International Congress Rehabilitation: Mobility, Exercise & Sports, which will be of interest to all those involved in the field of human movement sciences and the rehabilitation professions. Rehabilitation medicine is a relatively young discipline, as is the science of human movement, but both have progressed rapidly from their inception in the latter half of the 20th century to take their current place as important, muti-disciplinary, evidence based, academic and clinical research subjects. This congress, encompassing as it does the subject of assistive technology, brings together both local and international experts and practitioners for an exchange of current knowledge, experience and views, which will strengthen the collaboration between the rehabilitation profession and human movement and the social and engineering sciences worldwide. An individual's mobility is crucial for function, participation and quality of lfe. Addressing questions such as rehabilitation diagnosis, treatment strategy and monitoring, as well as assistive technology and environmental optimization, the benefits of exercise and sport and the issues of risks for overuse and secondary impairment, his book is a major contribution to debate, knowledge provision and development in this important area
Taming technology : the narrative anchor reconciling time, territory and technology in geoinformation infrastructures by Henk Koerten( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1,488 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is often assumed that innovative technology is an essential resource for the establishment of an information infrastructure. This study on geoinformation infrastructures convincingly demonstrates that technology is an important and far more complex factor than much geoinformation practitioners want us to believe. Three Dutch cases were studied, of which two were intended to develop an infrastructure deliberately applying innovative technology. Due to a constant stream of innovations these cases failed to bring about a working infrastructure. The third case was aimed at establishing a system
A conflicted view of telehomecare after a 20 year journey by Anthony P Glascock( )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 1,481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Telehomecare systems have been in existence, in one form or another, for at least a decade. At the outset, the concept seemed to promise both a solution to controlling rising health care costs and a means of delivering the improved care which would enable the elderly to stay in their own homes for longer; but although it received enthusiastic support from governments and care professionals, as well as the commercial sector, adoption within a given community has not yet been achieved, and overall success has been limited at best. This book addresses the question of why, despite the investment of
Advances in semantic authoring and publishing by Tudor Groza( )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 1,477 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dissemination can be seen as a communication process between scientists. Over the course of several publications, they expose and support their findings, while discussing stated claims. Such discourse structures are trapped within the content of the publications, thus making the semantics discoverable only by humans. In addition, the lack of advances in scientific publishing, where electronic publications are still used as simple projections of paper documents, combined with the current growth in the amount of scientific research being published, transforms the process of finding relevant lite
Learning expressive ontologies by Johanna Völker( )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 1,475 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication advances the state-of-the-art in ontology learning by presenting a set of novel approaches to the semi-automatic acquisition, refinement and evaluation of logically complex axiomatizations. It has been motivated by the fact that the realization of the semantic web envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee is still hampered by the lack of ontological resources, while at the same time more and more applications of semantic technologies emerge from fast-growing areas such as e-business or life sciences. Such knowledge-intensive applications, requiring large scale reasoning over complex domai
Coping with blast-related traumatic brain injury in returning troops : wounds of war III by NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Wounds on War III( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1,468 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It has been shown that those who have served in both combat missions and peacekeeping operations are at increased risk for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Research suggests that this may result from their 'wounds of war'. Some wounds may be 'invisible', such as depression, stress, and chronic pain, while others, such as physical disabilities, are more obvious. In February 2011, 35 scientists and representatives from NATO and Partner countries met in Vienna, Austria for a three-day NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled "Wounds of War: Coping with Blast-Related Traumatic Brain Injury in Re
Biophotonics in pathology : pathology at the crossroads( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1,466 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Photonics is a term often used in relation to light-based circuits, but it is actually more inclusive, including the generation, emission, transmission, modulation and signal processing of light. Biophotonics is therefore a term which can be used to describe the development and application of optical techniques for the study of biological molecules, cells and tissues. This book presents some of the most promising new image-based and related technologies which have evolved in the last few years for the study, visualization, characterisation and analysis of abnormal cells and tissues, and discusses their current and potential applications in experimental pathology and clinical pathological diagnosis. The book contains more than a dozen papers contributed by experts in the field, and the technology is described in a manner accessible to an audience of pathologists, cell biologists and biochemists as well as biomedical engineers. Subjects covered include: advanced methods in fluorescence microscopy, automated image interpretation and computer-assisted diagnostics, magnetic resonance microscopy, impedence measurements in the biomedical sciences and raman scattering in pathology, among others. There is an increasing convergence of radiology and pathology, and although this book has been written from the perspective of pathology, it demonstrates a confluence of methodologies similar to those applied in radiology with morphological analysis at the cellular and tissue level, and will also be of interest to radiologists, as well as to other scientists and engineers working in overlapping areas
New trends in financial engineering : works under the auspices of the World Class University Program of Ajou University( )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 1,464 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Financial engineering is defined as the application of mathematical methods to the solution of problems in finance. The recent financial crisis raised many challenges for financial engineers: not only were financially engineered products such as collateralized debt obligations and credit default swaps implicated in causing the crisis, but the risk management techniques developed by financial engineers appeared to fail when they were most desperately needed. This book is the first in a series describing research by a multidisciplinary team of economists, mathematicians and control theorists exp
