Cultures in motion : studies in the Medieval and early modern periods( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume offers a collection of thirteen studies on the subject of intercultural contact and exchange in the medieval and early modern periods. The aim of the authors was to approach this phenomenon as broadly as possible, and the resulting volume is, therefore, a fusion of different approaches to a variety of historical sources and texts. Geographical areas that are often studied separately - including the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Latin West and Central Europe (especially Poland, Germany and Hungary) - are here presented together in order to allow for cross-period and cross-regional comparisons. The chronological scope is also unusually broad, beginning with Late Antiquity and encompassing both the Renaissance and its immediate aftermath
The art of literature, art in literature by Magdalena Bleinert( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These twelve essays examine the exchange between literature and the visual arts (mainly painting), which, since the turn of the nineteenth century, has gained prominence in literary criticism. Reading modern and postmodern texts, the authors consider literary works next to the artworks the poets and writers invoke. Such instances of artistic synthesis highlight evolving perspectives on art and literature and the expressive possibilities offered by the simultaneity of words and images. -- Provided by publisher

Academics of Jewish heritage in the modern history of the Jagiellonian University( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The book 'Academics of Jewish heritage in the modern history of the Jagiellonian University' is a collective work, anniversary commemorative publication connected with the 650th anniversary of the foundation of the Cracow Academy in 1364. The anniversary celebrations that fall in 2014 coincide with the celebration of 25 years of the Polish Republic which was reborn in 1989. Poland in the course of this period has changed dramatically and irreversibly: political and administrative changes, coupled with social and economic ones have occurred and which tie Poland to Europe and the free world. The Jagiellonian University is an active participant and partner in this academic, civilizational development. The 650th anniversary of the founding of the Jagiellonian University is an excellent opportunity to present and recall those academics of Jewish origin who were closely associated with the history of the university, with Cracow and with Poland, and who played a huge role in Polish science and culture. The present book is also a commemoration of those academics of Jewish origin who, together with their families, were persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust." --
Romantic dialogues and afterlives by Anna Paluchowska-Messing( Book )

3 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Romantic writers often asserted their individuality, but this assertion tended to take the form of positioning themselves in relation to other authors and literary texts. Thus they implicitly acknowledged the rich network of broadly understood poetic dialogue as an important and potent source for their own creativity. When in 1816 John Keats wrote "Great spirits now on earth are sojourning," he celebrated the originality of his contemporaries and the historical significance of his times, pointing to deep interest in "the hum of mighty works" in all the fields of human activity, to which "the nations" ought to listen. Keats's sonnet suggests not only stimulating exchanges between poets, artists and social thinkers in the same language, but also the idea of transnational appreciation and dialogue. The volume takes up this idea and explores the dialogues of Romantic authors within the wide scope of European and American cultures. Essays by scholars from Germany, Britain, Bulgaria, Poland, Canada and the United States of America examine Romantic writers' responses to their contemporaries, explore their dialogues with the culture of the past, and their interactions across the arts and sciences. They also scrutinize the Romantics' far-reaching influence on later writers and artists, and thus extend the network of artistic exchange to modern times. The volume offers a rich tapestry of interconnections that span across time and space, interlace languages and cultures, and link Romantic writers and artists with their predecessors and successors across Europe and America. The essays in the collection invite the reader to join ongoing dialogues between writers and their audiences, of the past and present."--
