Frei Otto : thinking by modeling( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 94 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Experimental architect and engineer Frei Otto's (1925-2015) innovative tent structures were modeled first and foremost on nature. Illustrated with over 250 black-and-white images and drawings from his archive, this oversized first monograph on his work accompanying the extensive exhibition at ZKM (2016) features for the first time a large number of his experimental models and drawings. In the 1950s, Frei Otto's tent structures left their mark on the horticultural shows of the new Bonn Republic; together with Behnisch & Partner he created the roof landscape for the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Otto's interdisciplinary mode of thinking harnessed architecture, technology, art, science, society and nature to civil engineering. Known for his lightweight tensile and membrane-based structures incorporating massive tent constructions like those by Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov and architect Antonio Gaudí, Otto perfected the construction of tents for both temporary and alternative housing. His interest in alternative materials for shelter originated with his internment as a POW after the war
Werkstatt für Photographie, 1976-1986 by Museum Folkwang Essen( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in German and English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first book about the history, influences, and impact of the 'Werkstatt für Photography'(Photography Workshop) founded by the Berlin photographer Michael Schmidt at the Volkshochschule Kreuzberg in 1976. In the midst of the Cold War, the Werkstatt initiated an artistic 'airlift' to the United States, a democratic field of experimentation beyond the pale of traditional vocational and political-institutional standards. Those same years witnessed the establishment of infrastructures in West Germany that paved the way for the emancipation of photography as an art form. These included 'documenta 6' (1977), the first photo galleries and photography journals, and a number of pathbreaking exhibitions. Berlin, Hanover, and Essen played important roles in that process. All in all, the picture of a medium in transition emerges, a medium that developed an autonomous form of artistic authorship in the field of documentary. This book presents the story of German photography in the 1970s and 1980s, its international ties, its protagonists, and its networks. The whole world a Bauhaus( Book )

3 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume explains in hitherto unknown depth the Bauhaus and its multi-faceted forms of expression, which extended far beyond the Constructivist language of the 1920s. Case studies from Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, Moscow, the USA and elsewhere show that the Bauhaus was not an exclusive undertaking of the modern age. Avant-gardes in many regions of the world examined the Bauhaus from their own point of view and integrated it into their discourses. In this way the Bauhaus became a global motor for new developments in society, culture and politics. --Publisher's website
Balthasar Burkhard by Balthasar Burkhard( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents the many facets of photographer Balthasar Burkhard (1944-2010), showing his self-invention as an artist and tracing the trajectory of the medium of photography in the later half of the twentieth century. Burkhard's work combines a sensitive understanding of the body as sculpture and the photographic image as a canvas, making him one of the pioneers in translating photography as a monumental tableau into contemporary art. This comprehensive book coalesces Burkhard's early role as a chronicler of the contemporary art of his time, especially as the main photographer for Swiss curator Harald Szeemann, his conceptual redefinition of photography together with other artists, and finally his emancipation as a photo artist. It accompanies a major retrospective organized by Museum Folkwang in Essen, Fotomuseum Winterthur and Fotostiftung Schweiz, the Museo d'arte della Svizzerra italiana in Lugano and the Balthasar Burkhard Estate in Bern. Exhibition: Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (20.10.2017- 14.01.2018) / Fotomuseum Winterthur und Fotostiftung Schweiz, Winterthur, Switzerland (11.02. - 21.04.2018) / Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano, Switzerland (09.06. - 02.09.2018)
Himmel aus Beton = Skies of concrete by Gisela Erlacher( Book )

4 editions published in 2015 in German and English and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"After a degree in psychology and studies in camera and cinematography at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Gisela Erlacher has turned to photography entirely. For more than twenty years, she has been working on contemporary architecture and on topics related to urban and suburban space. For her recent project Skies of Concrete she travelled to China, Britain, the Netherlands and to parts of her home country Austria. The images show bridges: elevated roads in cities, viaducts, entangled lanes of expressway intersections. Yet Erlacher's interest is neither on the function of bridges nor on their nature as symbols for communication or mobility. She directs her gaze at the spaces that the crossing of a transport route causes to open up as a specific area within the urban fabric or in the countryside. She focuses on absurd situations that can occur when existing structures are drastically changed by building a bridge or when dead spaces beneath bridges are functionalised in one form or another. This new book features some forty of Erlacher's striking photographs, complemented by essays on her work and the spaces she has captured in her images." -- OCLC

What, you don't know Grapus? by Léo Favier( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Grapus is a French graphic design collective founded in Paris by François Miehe, Pierre Bernard and Gérard Paris-Clavel immediately following the student protests of May 1968. The group saw life as a field for experimentation, putting the new political, social and cultural debates into graphic form for public discussion. At first Grapus designed posters for local chapters of the Communist Party; 20 years later, they designed the corporate identity for the Louvre in Paris. By the late 1980s, the collective's fruitful days were over. In its productive phase it had attracted many highly-committed graphic artists, and was honoured with the French Grand prix national des arts plastiques in 1990. Léo Favier set out in search of the colleagues and fellow campaigners of old. The 25 interviews in his book tell of the utopian working methods and heated disputes that formed the heart of this collective way of life

Jenny Jenny : Tobias Zielony by Tobias Zielony( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in German and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Le Vele di Scampia" is a futuristic housing estate in northern Naples and a Camorra battlefield. Conceived by Francesco di Salvo in the late seventies and widely recognized for their urbanistic, "Le Vele" (The Sails) were squatted by mafia families even before completion. Today the building complex is a symbol of the Camorra's power in the Naples region and a key centre of European drug trafficking. Matteo Garrone shot his movie "Gomorra" based on the novel by Roberto Saviano on the site in 2008. Tobias Zielony's film "Le Vele di Scampia" from 2009 originates in this very place. Seven thousand single images, shot at night with a digital single-lens reflex camera, are used to create nine minutes of animation film. The book "Vele" is based on this animation film with an selection of 287 single images.--Publisher
Traffic assistants ; Theseus und Kentaur by Frank Berger( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Leipzig photographer Frank Berger brings together two projects, "Traffic Assistants" (Shanghai 2008) and "Theseus and Kentaur" (Vienna 2007) in this handsome slipcased two-volume set accompanying a museum exhibition. Comprised of extensive series of photographic images taken in a single setting, both projects depict variations of mundane dramas in identical frames. Shot in high-resolution on reversal color slide film and exhibited as projections, the pictures do not capture a "unique moment,"; but (in exhibition) are presented in an endless loop of similar but layered images, a method that perhaps can be described as a gesture of insistence. Human figures become heroic subjects of contemplation in "Theseus and Kentaur", or Chaplinesque figures in "Traffic Assistants", in which police in Shanghai try to control local traffic. Whatever the subject, the insistent look of the photographer transforms each setting into a visual stage, in which the static scenery outlasts the cast of characters
Bahak : Die Last der Dinge = Burden of Things by Anja Bohnhof( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in German and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Oh ... : Jakob Lena Knebl und die Mumok Sammlung by Jakob Lena Knebl( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in German and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Artist Jakob Lena Knebl (born in 1970 in Baden) has no interest in thinking in predefined categories, neither in her life nor in her art. Her new arrangement of the mumok collection of modernist and contemporary art is a free and creative selection combined with new own works. The artist has the courage to be eccentric. Knebl focuses on classical modernism and the 1970s, an epoch of utopias, visions for society, and sexual experiments. The first of the two exhibition levels is devoted to a large installation characteristic of Knebl's work, addressing constructs of identity, desire, and sensual experience. The artist herself also appears as an avatar in a digital, interactive installation in which artworks become protagonists. Visitors to this exhibition can follow the narrative and also shape it. The second level of the exhibition links scenarios of living like those known from trade fairs and furniture and design shows with works from the mumok collection--the fields of art, design, and fashion are continually shifting position. Moments of clarity alternate with uncertainty as to the function and arrangement of the objects presented. Designed by Jakob Lena Knebl. Curated by Barbara Rüdiger and Susanne Neuburger. Triennale 2017 : Valais/Wallis : 26.08-22.10 by Triennale Valais/Wallis( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in Multiple languages and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Highway rest areas are usually art-free zones, but the 'Relais du Saint-Bernard' on the A9 is an exception. It has been selected by curators Simon Lamunière, Véronique Mauron and Julia Hountou as the prime location for the Triennale Valais/Wallis 2017. It's a paradoxical setting where nature, mobility, consumption and freedom come together in which the works of thirty international, Swiss and local artists will be created and installed. The exhibition at this extraordinary spot offers the chance to venture off well-trodden and clearly defined paths and glimpses what lies beyond the gleaming surfaces of the cultural business that has become increasingly trapped by rigid, habituated practices. Taking the form of a guidebook, this publication presents and explains the exhibited works in two volumes, one with images, one with texts. Furthermore, it includes a map of the location as well as a booklet on the Valais art institutions that are responsible for this remarkable art triennial."--

Idyl in an electronics factory by Maria Loboda( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in German and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Maria Loboda has developed a new work for the Rotunda at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, a structure that is open to the public: Tout terriblement consists of two laurel hedges that project upward to the first floor, blocking passage through the space and turning it into a labyrinth. The hedges are set into concrete tubs, in which the artist has carved letters. Together they spell out ?Tout te**iblement,? a phrase popularized by Yves Saint Laurent. The exhibition title Idyl in an Electronics Factory is a reference to a review with the same title that appeared in the US design magazine Interiors in 1963. The article critiqued a design by the pioneering landscape architect James C. Rose, who integrated into his practice a holistic approach using components that were both animate and inanimate, mutable and immutable00Exhibition: Rotunde in der Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt am Main, Germany (16.11.2018 - 03.02.2019)
Jens Klein - Sunset by Jens Klein( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Neue Meisterhäuser in Dessau, 1925-2014 : Debatten. Positionen. Kontexte( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
