Experimental architect and engineer Frei Otto's (1925-2015) innovative tent structures were modeled first and foremost on nature. Illustrated with over 250 black-and-white images and drawings from his archive, this oversized first monograph on his work accompanying the extensive exhibition at ZKM (2016) features for the first time a large number of his experimental models and drawings. In the 1950s, Frei Otto's tent structures left their mark on the horticultural shows of the new Bonn Republic; together with Behnisch & Partner he created the roof landscape for the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Otto's interdisciplinary mode of thinking harnessed architecture, technology, art, science, society and nature to civil engineering. Known for his lightweight tensile and membrane-based structures incorporating massive tent constructions like those by Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov and architect Antonio Gaudí, Otto perfected the construction of tents for both temporary and alternative housing. This is the first book about the history, influences, and impact of the 'Werkstatt für Photography'(Photography Workshop) founded by the Berlin photographer Michael Schmidt at the Volkshochschule Kreuzberg in 1976. In the midst of the Cold War, the Werkstatt initiated an artistic 'airlift' to the United States, a democratic field of experimentation beyond the pale of traditional vocational and political-institutional standards. Those same years witnessed the establishment of infrastructures in West Germany that paved the way for the emancipation of photography as an art form. These included 'documenta 6' (1977), the first photo galleries and photography journals, and a number of pathbreaking exhibitions. Berlin, Hanover, and Essen played important roles in that process. All in all, the picture of a medium in transition emerges, a medium that developed an autonomous form of artistic authorship in the field of documentary. This book presents the story of German photography in the 1970s and 1980s, its international ties, its protagonists, and its networks. "After a degree in psychology and studies in camera and cinematography at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Gisela Erlacher has turned to photography entirely. For more than twenty years, she has been working on contemporary architecture and on topics related to urban and suburban space. For her recent project Skies of Concrete she travelled to China, Britain, the Netherlands and to parts of her home country Austria. The images show bridges: elevated roads in cities, viaducts, entangled lanes of expressway intersections. Yet Erlacher's interest is neither on the function of bridges nor on their nature as symbols for communication or mobility. She directs her gaze at the spaces that the crossing of a transport route causes to open up as a specific area within the urban fabric or in the countryside. Grapus is a French graphic design collective founded in Paris by François Miehe, Pierre Bernard and Gérard Paris-Clavel immediately following the student protests of May 1968. The group saw life as a field for experimentation, putting the new political, social and cultural debates into graphic form for public discussion. At first Grapus designed posters for local chapters of the Communist Party; 20 years later, they designed the corporate identity for the Louvre in Paris. By the late 1980s, the collective's fruitful days were over. In its productive phase it had attracted many highly-committed graphic artists, and was honoured with the French Grand prix national des arts plastiques in 1990. Léo Favier set out in search of the colleagues and fellow campaigners of old. "Le Vele di Scampia" is a futuristic housing estate in northern Naples and a Camorra battlefield. Conceived by Francesco di Salvo in the late seventies and widely recognized for their urbanistic, "Le Vele" (The Sails) were squatted by mafia families even before completion. Today the building complex is a symbol of the Camorra's power in the Naples region and a key centre of European drug trafficking. Matteo Garrone shot his movie "Gomorra" based on the novel by Roberto Saviano on the site in 2008. Tobias Zielony's film "Le Vele di Scampia" from 2009 originates in this very place. Seven thousand single images, shot at night with a digital single-lens reflex camera, are used to create nine minutes of animation film. The book "Vele" is based on this animation film with an selection of 287 single images.--Publisher

Leipzig photographer Frank Berger brings together two projects, "Traffic Assistants" (Shanghai 2008) and "Theseus and Kentaur" (Vienna 2007) in this handsome slipcased two-volume set accompanying a museum exhibition. Comprised of extensive series of photographic images taken in a single setting, both projects depict variations of mundane dramas in identical frames. Shot in high-resolution on reversal color slide film and exhibited as projections, the pictures do not capture a "unique moment,"; but (in exhibition) are presented in an endless loop of similar but layered images, a method that perhaps can be described as a gesture of insistence. Human figures become heroic subjects of contemplation in "Theseus and Kentaur", or Chaplinesque figures in "Traffic Assistants", in which police in Shanghai try to control local traffic. Whatever the subject, the insistent look of the photographer transforms each setting into a visual stage, in which the static scenery outlasts the cast of characters

Dennoch sind sie unverzichtbar, um die gigantischen Warenströme einer Megametropole bewegen zu können, allein deren Strassen in der Regel zu voll, zu verstopft und zu schmal sind, um hierfür in ausreichender Weise Kraftfahrzeuge nutzen zu können. Am Rand dieser Strassen habe ich für ein paar Wochen ein improvisiertes Studio aufgebaut und einige Lastenträger gebeten, einen kurzen Moment anzuhalten, um sie einzeln und herausgelöst aus der stets in Bewegung befindlichen, geschäftigen Masse von Menschen zu portraitieren: Ausdruck eines bewundernden Staunens über die sichtbaren Kunstfertigkeiten, die das Bewegen von Dingen beinhalten kann. Die fotografische Arbeit "Bahak" lässt aber auch die Last der Dinge gewahr werden, die sie, jenseits ihres Gebrauchswertes und grundsätzlich, auch sein können - weit über die Stadtgrenzen Kolkatas hinaus."

Maria Loboda has developed a new work for the Rotunda at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, a structure that is open to the public: Tout terriblement consists of two laurel hedges that project upward to the first floor, blocking passage through the space and turning it into a labyrinth. The hedges are set into concrete tubs, in which the artist has carved letters. Together they spell out ?Tout te**iblement,? a phrase popularized by Yves Saint Laurent. The exhibition title Idyl in an Electronics Factory is a reference to a review with the same title that appeared in the US design magazine Interiors in 1963. The article critiqued a design by the pioneering landscape architect James C. Bei der Bombardierung von Dessau versanken im Frühjahr 1945 auch das Direktorenhaus und das Meisterhaus Moholy-Nagy in Schutt und Asche. Nachdem in den 1990er Jahren die Dessauer Meisterhaussiedlung – Inbegriff der Künstlerkolonie im 20. Jahrhundert – in ihren ursprünglichen Zustand zurückversetzt wurde, begann auch eine Debatte über den Wiederaufbau der beiden im Krieg zerstörten Häuser. 2010 wurde unter Beratung des englischen Stararchitekten David Chipperfield beschlossen, die Meisterhäuser Gropius und Moholy-Nagy nicht 1:1 wieder zu errichten, sondern mit zeitgenössischen Mitteln zu rekonstruieren. Und so sind sie nun in einer innovativen Reduktion und Abstraktion des jeweiligen Ursprungshauses nach Entwürfen des Berliner Büros Bruno-Fioretti-Marquez wiedererrichtet worden.
