Letters, original and photocopies, written to parents, brothers, sisters and friend, Morris Birkbeck, while traveling through the United States. He describes the cities he passes through, discussing their people, business, industries and surrounding land and agriculture. After discussing the influx of European goods to America he states that "agriculture is flourishing but commerce is in great confusion". He describes the differences in people from state to state. He relates what he has learned about the "wild animals", bears, panthers, deer and snakes. He tells them of the "ridiculous custom of indiscriminate introduction and handshaking". In a letter to his sisters he describes the differences in the role of the lady of the house in Viginia and Pennsylvania

Journal kept aboard the boat to America. Landed in New York and relates experience attending a Negro church while there. In Philadelphia he discusses his visit to a prison, the prisoners, the rules and regulations and differences from England. He describes the industry in Pittsburgh and the Germans who inhabit much of Pennsylvania. He discusses the founding of Harmony, Ohio and the beautiful farms of Kentucky. In various cities he lists the prices of items, wages for laborers, cost of services and prices of land. Describes the crops that are grown and the livestock, especially sheep, in which he was especially interested. He also describes the land, mountains, valleys, forests, flowers and trees. He describes the people he meets their homes, families, farms and his own responses to them. He refers to America having "a class of wealthy peasants, not known to us."
