Feelings : soft art( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first in an exciting new series, this book is an intimate exploration of contemporary art today. Focused on material qualities and the feelings evoked by a work, this thematic approach returns to the basic pleasure of experiencing art. An easy, evocative look at artists and their projects, this heavily illustrated publication features hands-on insight from within the art world and without. Drawing on hundreds of new paintings, sculptures, photographs, and other practices, extended essays develop common threads. Brief texts and interviews reveal the making of soft works and artists' relationships with the materials they use. Other contributions celebrate instinctual reactions to art across all mediums. The publication includes original works created exclusively for 'Soft Art'
Calabi-Yau manifolds and related geometries : lectures at a summer school in Nordfjordeid, Norway, June 2001 by M. W Gross( )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is an expanded version of lectures given at a summer school on symplectic geometry in Nordfjordeid, Norway, in June 2001. The unifying feature of the book is an emphasis on Calabi-Yau manifolds. The first part discusses holonomy groups and calibrated submanifolds, focusing on special Lagrangian submanifolds and the SYZ conjecture. The second studies Calabi-Yau manifolds and mirror symmetry, using algebraic geometry. The final part describes compact hyperkahler manifolds, which have a geometric structure very closely related to Calabi-Yau manifolds. The book is an introduction to a very active field of research, on the boundary between mathematics and physics. It is aimed at graduate students and researchers in geometry and string theory and intended as an introductory text, requiring only limited background knowledge. Proofs or sketches are given for many important results. Moreover, exercises are provided
Hayv Kahraman by Hayv Kahraman( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 40 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The vital practice of Hayv Kahraman produces ethereal figures relating to each other in complex grounds. Their grace belies the brutal history of violence and displacement Kahraman s subjects endure, creating an oscillating effect that entices the viewer with its seductive order. The artist combines elements of Italian Renaissance painting and twelfth-century Baghdadi illuminated manuscripts to create an evocative, hybrid vocabulary. Her quietly radical shifts - where traditional Iraqi screens geometric patterns are replaced with sections of a woman's body, or a manuscript figure is presented as doll-like parts - convey the artist's developing exploration of femininity, acculturation, and abstract patterns. Essays by Martin Daughtry, Walter Mignolo, and Octavio Zaya accompany works from all series to date, where graphic patterning attests alternately to violence and to moments of agency, community, and escape
