Bioenergy from dendromass for the sustainable development of rural areas by
David Butler Manning(
)
8 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 668 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Based on the results of two bioenergy research initiatives in Germany, this reference examines the sustainable management of wood biomass in rural areas. The large number of participating organizations and research institutes ensures a balanced and unbiased view on the potentials and risks is presented, taking into account economic, ecological, and social aspects. Most of the results reported are available here for the first time in English and have been collated in central Europe, but are equally applicable to other temperate regions. They highlight best practices for enhancing dendromass po

The clearance of shrubs is one key issue in landcape conservation and biotope protection. In several steps a machine concept is developed for fully-mechanised clearance of shrubs on open landscapes. After determining the range of a shortfall in existing and appropriate techniques the concept is specified. In consideration of the special demands of landscape conservation measures and technical/ technological aspects a prototype is built which is suitable for clearance and removal of bushy vegetation in one single operation. This prototype is tested in the surroundings of Goettingen

In the context of climate change and the decrease of fossil fuels the production of renewable energies should be extended. The use of biomass is one option to help secure the energy supply. Based on the need for regional increase of biomass production for material and energetic use the research framework BEST - for the support of bioenergy regions - is being conducted since 2010. One focus of BEST is set on the development of regionally adapted concepts and innovative systems for the production of woody biomass taking into account ecological and economic effects. Research activities of BEST

Der Wasserverbrauch von KUP übersteigt in der Regel den Wasserverbrauch von Ackerkulturen, kann aber auch den Wasserverbrauch von Laubwälder bei weitem übersteigen. Due to its physical properties Biochar has the potential of stabilizing a forest rejuvenation during periods of drought. To verify this, a field trial was set up in 2014 in the Hessian Ried. The observed mortality of the trees should be significantly lower compared to the local method. The site is characterized by sandy soil and its low water holding capacity and a low nitrogen supply. The pH is usually above 6.2 and is due to the calcareous substrate. In a randomized block trial, six different coal variants with 80 t ha-1 were applied and milled to a soil depth of 25 cm. Hornbeams and pine
