Seven years in Tibet by Heinrich Harrer( Book )

9 editions published between 1953 and 1998 in English and held by 1,981 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Originally published in 1953, this adventure classic recounts Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer's 1943 escape from a British internment camp in India, his daring trek across the Himalayas, and his happy sojourn in Tibet, then, as now, a remote land little visited by foreigners. Warmly welcomed, he eventually became tutor to the Dalai Lama, teenaged god-king of the theocratic nation. The author's vivid descriptions of Tibetan rites and customs capture its unique traditions before the Chinese invasion in 1950, which prompted Harrer's departure. A 1996 epilogue details the genocidal havoc wrought over the past half-century.--www.amazon.com

With a mounting suspense the author leads his hero through these last days to a terrifying climax, which, through Andreas' final vision, commenty obliquely on war and upon the Nazi attempt to conquer the world
The forsaken army; a novel by Heinrich Gerlach( Book )

8 editions published between 1958 and 2002 in English and German and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"February 1943: after six weeks of appalling struggle for the city of Stalingrad the German Sixth Army, originally 270,000 strong, finally surrendered. A starved and exhausted remnant of 91,000 German soldiers was taken into captivity. By 1945 only about 6,000 were still alive, and only a handful ever returned from Russia. Heinrich Gerlach was one of them. From the moment of surrender he began to collect the personal stories of his fellow prisoners, everyone from generals to veteran infantrymen to boys who had only just left the Hitler Youth. It was his mission to tell the world how the Sixth Army, loyal to the last, had been sacrificed to the megalomania of one man, Hitler, who refused to order withdrawal even when there was no other possible course. The stories Gerlach collected he wove into this novel of bitter, hopeless betrayal, which relates one of the great events of twentieth century history. Every episode, every character, every detail of description in it is wholly authentic, making for a memorable and deeply moving book - one of the great classics of war literature."--Jacket
