Dopo poco tempo Emily tornando a casa trova i genitori morti per suicidio. L'unico messaggio che i genitori lasciano alla loro figlia è quello di cercarsi una passione. Ed Emily decide allora di avere un bambino per donargli tutto l'amore che sente di non aver avuto dai genitori. Nel corso degli anni costruirà quindi un rapporto morboso ed esclusivo con il figlio Paul. Emily viaggia lungo tutto il Paese cambiando casa in continuazione per evitare che il rapporto esclusivo con Paul possa essere oggetto di interferenze da parte delle autorità, dei vicini curiosi o di incontri non previsti. Anche un possibile amore di Emily per un uomo conosciuto durante le sue peregrinazioni viene sacrificato per proteggere il suo rapporto esclusivo con "loverboy". Tutto procede per il meglio finché Paul inizia ad andare a scuola e il rapporto di Emily con il figlio inizia a vacillare. Decisa a non perdere il bambino, Emily decide di suicidarsi insieme a lui, ma all'ultimo momento un vicino riesce a salvare il bambino
