3 editions published in 2018 in French and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

L?ouvrage comprend trois parties.

2 editions published in 2015 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The vestiges of Roman theatres are ubiquitous throughout the Mediterranean Basin; these structures are familiar, yet remain relatively unexplored, with only a few studies considering their general place in Roman life. Inspired by research on the theatres and entertainment buildings of more recent times, this study offers an urbanistic perspective on these multipurpose edifices; characteristic of the urbanitas, these were at the same time buildings for theatrical performances, ritual ceremonies, and daily activities; civic and religious meeting places; centres of social interaction. The innovations the Romans made to the architectural theatrical form invented by the Greeks enabled them to redefine the theatre's place in the city and to incorporate it purposefully into their plans for urbanization. Combining the analysis of ancient textual and pictoral representations of Roman theatres with archaeological case studies, this thesis explores and clarifies the practical and symbolic relationships between the theatre and the city in Roman times. By broadening the scope of investigation and by exploring the dynamic and affective positioning of the theatre into the Roman urban landscape, this thesis reveals these architectural structures to be simultaneously typical and unique, complex and understandable, and ultimately remarkably effective in establishing and embodying the image of the city
RECHERCHES SUR LES MODELES HELLENISTIQUES ET L'ART ROMAIN (DU 3E SIECLE AV. J.-C. A L'EPOQUE D'AUGUSTE). RECEPTION, FONCTION, INTERPRETATION by Renaud Robert( Book )

THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO DEFINE CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE FORMING OF ROMAN ART AND AESTHETIC THOUGT, FOCUSING ON THE USE AND INTERPRETATION OF IMPORTED GREEK MODELS. THE FIRST SECTION DEALS WITH THE ANALYSIS OF AN ICONOGRAPHIC THEME-BATTLES AGAINST THE GAULS-, REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PROBLEMS CONNECTED WITH THE ADOPTION OF GREEK ARTISTIC TRADITION AND IDEOLOGY IN ROME. THIS STUDY LEADS TO QUESTION THE MEANING OF ROMAN TRIOMPHAL REPRESENTATIONS BASED ON THE GLORIFIACTION OF THE TRIOMPHER THROUGH THE IMAGE OF THE SUFFERINGS OF HIS DEFEATED ENNEMIES. IN THE SECOND SECTION, THE DISSERTATION RETRACES THE DIFFERENT HISTORICAL STAGES OF THE PERCEPTION OF WORKS OF ART IN ROME, BY EXAMINING THE EVIDENCE OFFERED BY PLAUTUS, TERENTIUS, LUCILIUS, VARRO, VIRGIL AND OVID ON THE THEORETICAL CONCERNS, TASTES, AND ARTISTIC INTERESTS OF THE ROMAN PUBLIC
J.-C. by Mathilde Carrive( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For a long time, studies on Roman wall paintings in Italy have been focusing their attention on the glorious Vesuvian documents, consequently overlooking evidence from the late 1st to the late 3rd c. AD. This thesis aims at exploring this neglected period and at understanding stylistic evolutions in relation to domestic architecture and decoration. In order to reach this objective, a relational database has been designed, bringing together data on wall painting, other elements of decoration, and architectural and spatial features of the room. This has enables us to bring to light how wall painting structured domestic space throughout the period. From the late 1st up to the mid 3rd c. (after which evidence become scarce), there are strong elements of continuity. But the zone under study can be divided in two main regions, Central Italy and Northern Italy, that experienced divergent evolutions, not only stylistically, but also in the way decoration structured domestic space. Furthermore, a particular focus on the rich evidence from Ostia, considered in the broader context of Central Italy, emphasised how the role assigned to decoration was also dependent on the socioeconomic bakcground of the occupant. By putting wall paintings back in its context, this study thus contributes to a better understanding of its evolution, function and status, at the heart of Roman everyday life

L'hermès à portrait dans l'Occident romain : fonctions, contextes et significations by Sarah Andrès( )

1 edition published in 2018 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This study aspires to acheive a catalog of portrait herms in the Roman West in order to apprehend the semantic meaning of this original figurative support. Erected since achairc times by the crossroads and doors of greek cities, herms become, under roman influence, pedestals for portraits and not only representations of divinity. Those portraits can be divided into two iconographical categories : retrospective ones reproducing features of historical figures such as Homer and Menander, and those of private citizens, sometimes dedicated to their Genius and raised in the atrium of their house. More than a simple stylistical and iconographical analysis of this corpus, this study tries to give an historical and cultural reading of thoses sculptures, from the workshop to their exhibition contexts. This approach must allow the depiction of all the actors involved in thoses dedications, the clarification of thematic choices as of the reasons for choosing these abbreviated images, the definition of their place in the private space of the Roman villas in the context of domestic cults or that of the otium

1 edition published in 2018 in Italian and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The research project, presented in this manuscript, illustrates the decoration of imperial villas in the Roman suburbium. Thanks to literary, archaeological and epigraphic sources, its purpose is to understand how these villas were characterised both from the point of view of their architecture as of their decoration. Indeed, each villa has been subject of accurate investigations, in which all elements were parsed, classified and interpreted. Subsequently, the attention is focused on the comparison between the decorative features of the suburbium's villas and those of the other imperial residences scattered in Latium region. This allowed to analyse in details the evolution of the correlation between architecture and decor in the different areas of the imperial villa (representative rooms, thermal baths, gardens, entertainment buildings,...). In addition, it helped understanding the choice of sculptural subjects made by the emperors, such as the group of Niobids or Odyssey episodes. Moreover, topographic and chronological studies of these contexts gave the opportunity to understand the occupation dynamics of the territory on the part of the imperial power, but also to analyse the formation, evolution and transformation processes of these residences. Finally, through the study of suburban residential complexes, it is possible to face the wider questioning on the identification of an imperial villa, an issue that has never been approached in an exhaustive and systematic way

1 edition published in 2012 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

1 edition published in 2018 in Italian and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In summer 2012 a luxuriosus roman villa, dated to augustean age, is been discovered during an archeological escavation in Ciampino (Rome). A group of marble statues, showing the Niobids, is finded into the natatio pool. During the XIX century, in the same place, a lead pipe mentioning Valerius Messalla was discovered; this finding suggested that the villa was owned by this powerful senatorial gens. The research area, called Muro/Muri dei Francesi, is located beyond the last slope of Alban Hills in their congiuction point with Campagna Romana plan, in Rome's South-East suburbium. The plan, from the geo-morphological point of view, is crossed by a several natural ditches and a low straight ridge who link the Alban Hills to Tiber river valley: therefore - also tanks to the development of ancient roads network - this area well be one of most populated by roman aristocracy villas. The Ciampino's Niobids are similars to Florence Uffizi Museum Group, but different for the presence of some unknown characters and for iconographic rendering of details. This offer new possibilities for the knowledge and interpetation of the first Niobides group of which we dispose of an archaeological data set. The two research approaches are been: the collection and critical analysis of archives documents dated at XIX century and, as regards fieldwork research, the stratigraphic analysis of the available masonry structures (excavated for less than 40%), with the complementary realisation of detailed relief and graphic documentation. At last, the study and documentation of the archaeological materials coming from the excavation, which allowed, with sufficient tolerance, the chronology of the site to be determined

1 edition published in 2015 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This memoir seeks to study the importance of Homer texts in the Roman culture between the beginning of the civil wars and the end of Nero's reign. We will first define how the homeric text corpus has been transmitted with the literary and artistic creations which were born from it, from Greece to Rome, throughout the centuries. We will then try to explain which place Homer occupied in the Romans' daily and private life, particularly speaking of literature and of the decorations of the Pompeian houses; finally, we will examine his importance in public life, for the Republican politicians and for the first principes. Homer, though he was a Greek author, was nonetheless considered as a fundamental reference in Rome. The homeric heroes constant presence in Roman cultural imaginary, in the literature of this time as well as in the artistic productions and in the speeches of the public men, can only make us wonder about this presence and seek to analyse the rôle that these fictional characters played, in this century where a new Rome was being elaborated
