Ultras : the passion and performance of contemporary football fandom by Mark Doidge( )

4 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ultras have become the most dominant style of football fandom in the world having spread from Southern Europe across North Africa to Northern and Eastern Europe, SE Asia and North America. This book argues that ultras are an important site of enquiry into understanding contemporary society. They are a passionate, politically engaged collective that base their identity around a form of consumption (football) that links to modern notions of identity like masculinity and nationalism. 0'Ultras: the Passion and Performance of Contemporary Football Fandom' seeks to make a clear theoretical shift in studies of football fandom. Focussing on the common form of expression through the performance of choreographies, chants and sustained support throughout the match, this book shows how members build an emotional attachment to their club that valorises the colours and symbols of that team, whilst mobilising members against opponents
Politics, ideology and football fandom : the transformation of modern Poland by Radosław Kossakowski( )

3 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Football fans and football culture represent a unique prism through which to view contemporary society and politics. Based on in-depth empirical research into football in Poland, this book examines how fans develop political identities and how those identities can influence the wider political culture. It surveys the turbulent history of Poland in recent decades and explores the dominant right-wing ideology on the terraces, characterised by nationalism, 'traditional' values and anti-immigrant sentiment. As one of the first book-length studies of fandom in Eastern Europe, this book makes an important contribution to our understanding of society and politics in post-Communist states. Politics, Ideology and Football Fandom is an important read for students and researchers studying sport, politics and identity, as well as those working in sports studies and political studies covering sociology of sport, globalisation studies, East European politics, ethnic studies, social movements studies, political history and nationalism studies"--

FEMALE FANS, GENDER RELATIONS AND FOOTBALL FANDOM : challenging the brotherhood culture by Honorata Jakubowska( Book )

2 editions published in 2021 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book assesses the transformation of football fan culture from a gender perspective. Referring to the notions of homosociality, hegemonic masculinity, and performative perspectives on gender and fandom, it investigates the processes of women entering the world of football fandom. Drawing on multidimensional qualitative and quantitative research, the book analyses different aspects of female fandom, such as women's socialisation to be a fan, building their sense of fan identity, ways of performing fandom, and gender. Also, it explores the response of male fans by shedding light on the sense-making process of a growing number of female fans in the stands and its consequences for prevailingly male football culture. This study stands out for its richness and diversity of empirical material used in order to make a significant contribution to our understanding of social dynamics related to the changing nature of female football fandom"--
