The Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy yearbook 2011 : the global economic crisis and the case of Greece by Konstantina Botsiou( )

16 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in English and held by 420 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In all probability 2011 is going to be one of the most critical years in recent decades. The problems created by the global economic crisis continue to affect the lives of ordinary people and could become a source of social instability. At the same time, developments at international level are creating a sense of uncertainty since long-established balances are facing profound challenges. With contributions by distinguished scholars and policymakers from Greece and abroad, the Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy Yearbook 2011 addresses various issues of public debate both in Europe and internationally. Special attention is given to the global economic crisis and, more specifically, to its impact on Greece, which has recently found itself at the epicenter of international attention. Certain of the essays highlight the importance of leadership as an instrument for political reform, while a special section provides an update on the major global issue of climate change
The new authoritarianism by Alan Waring( )

5 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This two [that is, three]-volume book considers from a risk perspective the current phenomenon of the new alt-right authoritarianism and whether it represents 'real' democracy or an unacceptable hegemony potentially resulting in elected dictatorships and abuses as well as dysfunctional government. Contributing authors represent an eclectic range of disciplines, including cognitive, organizational and political psychology, sociology, history, political science, international relations, linguistics and discourse analysis, and risk analysis. The alt-right threats and risk exposures, whether to democracy, human rights, law and order, social welfare, racial harmony, the economy, national security, the environment, and international relations, are identified and analyzed across a number of selected countries. While Vol. 1 focuses on the U.S., Vol. 2 (ISBN 978-3-8382-1263-0) illuminates the phenomenon in the UK, Austria, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Italy, Hungary, and Russia. Potential strategies to limit the alt-right threat are proposed"--Back cover, volume 2
The Greek junta and the international system : a case study of southern European dictatorships, 1967-74 by Antōnios V Klapsēs( )

8 editions published between 2020 and 2021 in English and held by 100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book examines the international dimensions of the Greek military dictatorship of 1967-74 and uses it as a case study to evaluate the major shifts occurring in the international system during a period of rapid change. The policies of the major nation-states in both East and West were determined by realistic Cold War considerations. At the same time, the Greek junta, a profoundly anti-modernist force, failed to cope with an evolving international agenda and moves towards international cooperation. Denouncing it became a rallying point both for international organizations and for human rights activists, and it enabled the EEC to underscore the notion that democracy was an integral characteristic of the European identity. This volume is an original in-depth study of an under-researched subject and the multiple interactions of a complex era. It is divided into three sections: Part I deals with the interaction of the Colonels with state actors; Part II deals with the responses of international organizations and the rising transnational human rights agenda for which the Greek junta became a totemic rallying point; Part III compares and contrasts the transitions to democracy in Southern Europe, and analyses the different models of transition, region building and how they intersected with attempts to foster a European identity. The Greek dictatorship may have been a parochial military regime, but its rise and fall interacted with significant international trends and can therefore serve as a salient case study for promoting a better understanding of international and European trends during the 1960s and 1970s. This book will be of much interest to students of Cold War studies, international history, foreign policy, transatlantic relations and International Relations, in general."--
