Gannenmono : a legacy of eight generations in Hawaiʻi by Kei Suzuki( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"In 1968, as a complement to an exhibit of the same name, Bishop Museum published the booklet Children of the Gan-nen-mono: The First-Year Men by Y. Baron Goto, in commemoration of the centennial of the arrival of the gannenmono to Hawaiʻi. Fifty years later, we celebrate their sesquicentennial anniversary with a Museum exhibition and this publication, Gannenmono: A Legacy of Eight Generations in Hawaiʻi. Although much information about the lives of these first Japanese immigrants to Hawaiʻi has been lost over the last 150 years, the surviving records of these men and women give strong testimony to their courage and resolve in the face of exploitation and abuse. But the true legacy of the gannenmono can perhaps be seen in the lives of their descendants. Their families are evidence of their history, and through their efforts are forever part of the increasingly integrated community that has become the ʻohana of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific."--Page vi
