Incidents of travel in Central America, Chiapas, & Yucatan by John L Stephens( Book )

1 edition published in 1841 in English and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This new edition brings the best of both Stephens's narrative and Catherwood's drawings into a single volume with an added selection of photographs - many never before published - that expand a reader's view of the Maya ruins, the cities and scenes along the journey, and the native peoples whose cultures endure today. The illustrations include nineteenth-century scenes by the renowned photographer Eadweard Muybridge, portraits of Guatemalan Indians from the Smithsonian's Emilio Herbruger collection, and Osbert Salvin's early photos of Copan. More recent photographs of Guatemala by Jacques and Parney VanKirk and of the Lacandon in Mexico by Gertrude Duby Blom capture the timeless nature of the lands of the Maya that persists into the twentieth century

Views of nature, or, Contemplations on the sublime phenomena of creation : with scientific illustrations by Alexander von Humboldt( Book )

1 edition published in 1850 in English and held by 207 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) was an intellectual giant: an explorer who helped lay the foundations of biogeography, a naturalist who influenced Charles Darwin, and a botanist who developed a model of the Earth's climate zones. He travelled extensively in Europe, carried out scientific explorations across the Russian Empire and in Latin America, and devoted much energy to seeking a unified view of the different branches of scientific knowledge. Ansichten der Natur, published in 1808 with a second edition in 1826, aimed to 'engage the imagination' as well as to communicate new ideas, and was translated into many European languages. This authorised translation of the third and final 1849 edition, dating from Humboldt's eightieth year, was published in 1850, though another English translation (by Mrs Sabine) had appeared the previous year. The wide coverage, including geology, geography and biology, is typical of Humboldt, as is the precise and engaging style
The history of the Navy of the United States of America by James Fenimore Cooper( Book )

1 edition published in 1839 in English and held by 206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cooper first published his history in multiple volumes in 1838, but later pared it down to this one-volume version. Tales of buccaneers, colonial sea fights, the American Revolution, the Quasi-War with France, and the War of 1812 are all vividly recounted, and the original engravings have been retained to enhance the presentation of this new edition. No mere literary curiosity, the work deserves the attention of serious students of the period, both for its factual exposition and for the perspective Cooper brings to occurrences chronologically close to him. Like many historians, his interpretation of the facts was not accepted by all, and in his preface Cooper comments about attempts made to injure the book and his credibility. A classic in the finest sense of the word, this book has been a cornerstone in the ever-building corpus of American naval history."--BOOK JACKET
