Inamura Naomi, the daugther of a company president in Kyushu and an aspiring actress, goes to Tokyo with her best friend, Tachibana Ruriko, to audition for the movies. In Tokyo they meet Futaba, a club owner who was once Naomi's father's mistress, and Shiga Kōshirō, who was brought up with Naomi but is now working in the Tokyo branch of her father's company. Naomi passes the audition but Ruriko doesn't, so she ends up working as a hostess at Futaba's club. But Futaba is a procuress and sells Ruriko to one of the club's customers. Meanwhile, Naomi is being wooed by a young businessman, Takeuchi, who, unbeknownst to Naomi, is another one of Futaba's "special" customers. When Ruriko learns that Naomi is about to marry Takeuchi, she reveals his infidelity in order to save Naomi. Before returning to Kyushu, Naomi pleads with her childhood friend Shiga to save Ruriko, who happens to be secretly in love with Shiga

The construction boom after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 has inflated the price of building materials and the head of a yakuza-connected construction business, Ōdera Tsunezō, has a plan to monopolize the market. He wants to ally himself to a politicial fixer, Yamana, by marrying off his daughter Orin against her will to Yamana. One day, Tsunezō learns that Orin and one of his employees, Komura Shinjirō, run away together. Furious, Tsunezō orders another employee, Hanada Jōkichi, to kill Shinjirō in exchange for permission to leave behind the yakuza life. Jōkichi is reluctant to kill Shinjirō, whom he likes and admires, but when an itinerant yakuza offers to do the job, Jōkichi decides it would be a sign of respect to kill Shinjirō himself, rather than let him die at the hands of a complete stranger

Together they move to the nearby port of Tobota, where Kingorō again works as a longshoreman for the Nagata Group.
