Winter 1999. An older man returns home after Christmas with his family. It is a dark cold night and there is no living soul on the narrow road. Suddenly the car lights catch some movement in the distance. The driver brakes at the last minute. In front of him stands a shocked boy, almost frozen to death. He has deer antlers on his head. April 2013. 21-year-old ballerina is murdered; her dead body floats in a mountain lake. In the nearby forest, the police find a camera set on a tripod and aimed exactly at the crime scene. Someone scratched the number 4 on the lens. The case is restored to service Holger Munch, known from previous parts of the series. Mia Krüger joins the team. What's the link between these two mysterious matters?

"By Norway's bestselling novelist and the author of NORWEGIAN WOOD, a family story of epic scale. Edvard grows up on a remote mountain farmstead in Norway with his taciturn grandfather, Sverre. The death of his parents, when he was three years old, has always been shrouded in mystery - he has never been told how or where it took place and has only a distant memory of his mother. But he knows that the fate of his grandfather's brother, Einar, is somehow bound up with this mystery. One day a coffin is delivered for his grandfather long before his death - a meticulous, beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Perhaps Einar is not dead after all. Edvard's desperate quest to unlock the family's tragic secrets takes him on a long journey - from Norway to the Shetlands, and to the battlefields of France - to the discovery of a very unusual inheritance. The Sixteen Trees of the Somme is about the love of wood and finding your own self, a beautifully intricate and moving tale that spans an entire century."--Publisher's website

"When Liv, Ellen and Hakon, along with their partners and children, arrive in Rome to celebrate their father's seventieth birthday, a quiet earthquake occurs: their parents have decided to divorce. Shocked and disbelieving, the siblings try to come to terms with their parents' decision as it echoes through the homes they have built for themselves, and forces them to reconstruct the shared narrative of their childhood and family history."--Publisher
