The instrumentation of small sounding rockets for scientific experiments in the region from 50 km to approximately 110 km is described. These particular rockets were developed to measure the diurnal variations of proton spectra and electron densities during solar proton events. Seven rockets were flown with each carrying a three-channel proton spectrometer and a three-frequency Faraday rotation experiment. The proton spectrometer and Faraday rotation experiment are discussed in some detail.Because of difficulties experienced with the telemetry, considerable telemetry development had to be done. Although the telemetry was developed specifically for these rockets, it is of general interest and is described. In particular the report mentions modifications of the rocket antenna system, the voltage controlled oscillators, and the modification of a parametric amplifier for use with the Ft. Churchill range telemetry.Block diagram and photographs are included in the text, while detailed schematics of the pertinent electronics are included in an appendix

A preliminary study of the 100 eV to approx. 1 MeV plasma environment encountered by the P78-2 Spacecraft Charging at High Altitudes (SCATHA) satellite during its initial operation period was conducted. Forty-four days of 10-min averages of the four moments of the electron and ion distribution functions calculated from the SC5 and SC9 energetic particle measurements were analyzed to determine occurrence frequency, local time variation, geomagnetic activity variation, and L-shell variation. The single and double Maxwellian parameters derived from the four moments were similarly analyzed. The interrelationships between the moments and derived parameters were computed and the results compared with the ATS-5 and ATS-6 atlas of Garrett et al (1980). Results of this analysis establish a baseline range for the SCATHA plasma environment

This paper describes the ionosphere direct measurements satellite Explorer VIII, with emphasis on the physics of the experiments designed to measure electron density (RF impedance probe), electron temperature (electron temperature probe), positive ion concentration (ion current monitor), and ion mass (retarding potential probe). Experiments were also performed which measured the momentum, energy, and spatial distribution of dust particles. Experimental data presented are typical of that processed to date. Methods used by systems engineers to fulfill the special requirements imposed by the scientific experiments upon the over-all satellite design are described; and data such as the satellite's thermal and spin-decay history are reported. Of interest to spacecraft technologists concerned with the influence of the earth's magnetic field are measurements on effects of potential differences at various points on the satellite surface. A method for determining satellite aspect is also introduced. (Author)

This work has made extensive use of data taken by instruments funded by NASA contracts NAS 5-10364 (ATS-5) and NAS 5-21055 (ATS-6). Much use has been made of software also developed under the same contracts. The present contract was negotiated as a result of the realization that the UCSD plasma instruments onboard the ATS spacecraft could be used to specify an environmental model which would be of use to the Air Force in developing design specifications for spacecraft to prevent faulty operation due to environmentally induced electrostatic charging. In addition, reorganization and study of the existing data would also be of use in developing models which could be of use in predicting times when hazards to spacecraft from charging might be great. Within the next year, SCATHA will make the first observations from a vehicle specifically designed to study charging at geosynchronous orbit. We expect that refinements to the data presented here will result from that program, and that new models will result
