A newly revised edition of this classic work, exploring the diverse qualities essential for teaching in today's educational environment. According to Banner and Cannon, to be an effective teacher requires much more than technical skill. Great teaching is an art that combines a wide range of intellectual, moral, and emotional components. This classic work explores the qualities of mind and spirit that are essential for those seeking to help others acquire knowledge and understanding. It analyzes the specific qualities of successful teachers: learning, authority, ethics, order, imagination, tenacity, compassion, patience, character, and pleasure. Written in a clear and engaging style and applicable to all levels of teaching -- be it in schools and universities or on athletic fields and in the home -- the book encourages teachers to consider how they might enlarge their understanding of the great art of teaching. -- Provided by publisher

Becoming historians( )

10 editions published in 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,766 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this unique collection, the memoirs of eleven historians provide a fascinating portrait of a formative generation of scholars. Born around the time of World War II, these influential historians came of age just before the upheavals of the 1960s and '70s and helped to transform both their discipline and the broader world of American higher education. The self-inventions they thoughtfully chronicle led, in many cases, to the invention of new fields--including women's and gender history, social history, and public history--that cleared paths in the academy and made the study of the past more capacious and broadly relevant. In these stories--skillfully compiled and introduced by James Banner and John Gillis--aspiring historians will find inspiration and guidance, experienced scholars will see reflections of their own dilemmas and struggles, and all readers will discover a rare account of how today's seasoned historians embarked on their intellectual journeys"--Provided by publisher
Being a historian : an introduction to the professional world of history by James M Banner( )

20 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 1,472 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Based on the author's more than 50 years of experience as a professional historian in academic and other capacities, Being a Historian is addressed to both aspiring and mature historians. It offers an overview of the state of the discipline of history today and the problems that confront it and its practitioners in many professions. James M. Banner, Jr. argues that historians remain inadequately prepared for their rapidly changing professional world and that the discipline as a whole has yet to confront many of its deficiencies. He also argues that, no longer needing to conform automatically to the academic ideal, historians can now more safely and productively than ever before adapt to their own visions, temperaments, and goals as they take up their responsibilities as scholars, teachers, and public practitioners. Critical while also optimistic, this work suggests many topics for further scholarly and professional exploration, research, and debate"--

Revising educational statistics by James M Banner( Book )

5 editions published between 1985 and 1988 in English and held by 73 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When gathering and presenting educational statistics, five principles should be considered. (1) The data must be accurate, valid, and complete. Limitations, weaknesses, margins of error, and levels of confidence should be clearly stated. (2) The data must include comparable information, sought in comparable ways, in comparable forms, from comparable sources. (3) Data that do not have immediate utility should be collected such that they may be useful at a later time. (4) Historical statistics should be collected in order to provide the context for interpreting long-term change, the significance of change, and solutions to problems. (5) Data collection procedures should be simple and methods of reporting should be easy to use. The comparability of data concerning educational quality must be improved. The United States Department of Education and the Council of Chief State School Officers should cooperate with state officials to standardize data collection and presentation. Further research is needed in the areas of teachers' qualifications, student dropouts, art and music instruction, and programs to publish research results. (Gdc)

Presidential misconduct : from George Washington to today by James M Banner( )

2 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In May 1974, as President Richard Nixon faced impeachment following the Watergate scandal, the House Judiciary Committee commissioned a historical account of the misdeeds of past presidents. The account, compiled by leading presidential historians of the day, reached back to George Washington's administration and was designed to provide a benchmark against which Nixon's misdeeds could be measured. What the report found was that, with the exception of William Henry Harrison, every American president has been accused of misconduct. Now, as another president and his subordinates face an array of charges on a wide range of legal and constitutional offenses, a group of presidential historians has come together under the leadership of James M. Banner, Jr.-one of the historians who contributed to the original report-to bring the 1974 account up to date through Barack Obama's presidency. Based on current scholarship, this new material covers such well-known episodes as Nixon's Watergate crisis, Reagan's Iran-Contra scandal, Clinton's impeachment, and George W. Bush's connection to the exposure of intelligence secrets. But oft-forgotten events also take the stage: Carter's troubles with advisor Bert Lance, Reagan's savings and loan crisis, George H.W. Bush's nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, and Obama's Solyndra loan controversy

EVER-CHANGING PAST : why all history is revisionist history by James M Banner( Book )

1 edition published in 2021 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

History is not, and has never been, inert, certain, merely factual, and beyond reinterpretation. Taking readers from Thucydides to the origin of the French Revolution to the Civil War and beyond, James M. Banner, Jr.. explores what historians do and why they do it.0 Banner shows why historical knowledge is unlikely ever to be unchanging, why history as a branch of knowledge is always a search for meaning and a constant source of argument, and why history is so essential to individuals' awareness of their location in the world and to every group and nation's sense of identity and destiny. He explains why all historians are revisionists while they seek to more fully understand the past, and how they always bring their distinct minds, dispositions, perspectives, and purposes to bear on the subjects they study
Mixing the New History with the Old by James M Banner( Book )

1 edition published in 1988 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This article addresses how to integrate social history with political history to create today's U.S. history curriculum that will satisfy new U.S. citizens' need to receive instruction in their own ethnic past. One approach is to present U.S. history as a history of social relations among various ethnic groups and to stress the common legacy of events that has changed the lives of people. However, these events have affected ethnic populations differently, so the problem lies in how to equalize social and political history instruction. The curriculum should stress how these political events affected the various groups' lives and futures. Attention to the infusion of social and political history into the curriculum will keep history accurate and specific. (Djc)
