The notebooks contain records of depositions from witnesses in various cases, including contested wills, an attempted rape, and assault and battery. The books also contain detailed depositions regarding a black man arrested in Uxbridge, Mass. in Nov. 1854. John Aldrich and Capt. Scott Seagram, who had detained the man, claimed that he was a Charles B. Scott wanted for an assault in Providence, R.I. The town "public feeling," however, regarded the man a fugitive slave and demanded that he be released. The conflict resulted in an interpleader process. George S. Taft acted as an attorney for John Aldrich
