Physician, of Boston, Mass. Putnam's correspondence with his family during his study of medicine in Europe (1869-70) and other letters from his family and associates, notably Oliver Wendell Holmes (1881). Putnam family papers include family correspondence of Dr. Charles Gideon Putnam and his wife, Elizabeth Cabot Jackson Putnam, papers (1804-34) of her father, Dr. James Jackson, some (1804-06) relating to the Massachusetts Medical Society, and letters from Tracy Jackson Putnam to his mother describing activities while serving in the ambulance service during World War I. The collection includes Washburn family correspondence (1866-1879) and letters of William T. Washburn. Of interest is a vivid eyewitness account of the Battle of Ball's Bluff (1861), Leesburg, Virginia contained in a letter from Caspar Crowninshield to his mother

(Cont'd) Papers of Elizabeth C. Putnam (b.1836) contain a lengthy correspondence with her mother, Elizabeth C.J. Putnam, and with Anna Cabot Lowell (1808-94), who also corresponded with Putnam's mother and grandfather. Putnam's papers also contain letters, speeches, and notes of cases pertaining to her work with various Mass. state primary and reform schools and other state charity boards. Her social welfare work specifically concerned the placement and visiting of indigent children as wards of the State

Tufts served as a state agent for Mass. in Washington, D.C. and at home from 1867-79, working on behalf of soldiers to acquire pensions and other claims. Letters from Washington, particularly to editors of newspapers to which he contributed, describe Congressional action and other political news during Reconstruction. Letters from 1869-79 describe his work as a visiting agent for the Mass. Board of State Charities, in particular regarding the placement of juvenile offenders and wards of the state
