Die noch halbwüchsigen Gymnasiasten werden von ihrem sadistischen Ausbilder Himmelstoß entwürdigend gedrillt, bevor sie aufs Schlachtfeld abkommandiert werden. Dort wird sich Paul Bäumer angesichts des Todes seiner Freunde, die im Namen von Volk und Vaterland nacheinander abgeschlachtet werden, der Sinnleere von Krieg und Hurra-Patriotismus zwar bewußt, doch auch er kann der Todesmaschinerie nicht entrinnen. Bäumer fällt im Oktober 1918 wenige Tage vor Kriegsende, als er in der Ödnis des Schlachtfeldes nach einem Schmetterling greift.
