"This report summarizes the approach, activities, and results of a study to evaluate the potential safety benefits of Plastics and Composites Intensive Vehicles (PCIVs), to enable their deployment by 2020. The main goals were to review and assess the state of knowledge in order to identify gaps, key research needs, and the challenges and opportunities for safety enhancements. PCIV-related safety enhancements that could benefit an aging driver population were selected as a priority research focus. The Situation Analysis was conducted, based on a review of technical literature, national research efforts on automotive light-weighting and the crash safety performance of advanced materials, complemented by a focused survey of diverse subject matter experts. The analysis identified near-term, midterm, and long-term research needs and priorities to facilitate future PCIV deployment. A PCIV Safety Roadmap was developed, which synthesizes the study findings and outlines follow-on research and milestones to measure progress towards the design, development and technology integration of fuel-efficient and safe PCIVs by 2020"--Technical report documentation page
Effects of catastrophic events on transportation system management and operations : cross cutting study by John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (U.S.)( Book )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report documents the actions taken by transportation agencies in response to catastrophic events as an overall effort to examine the impacts of different types of events on transportation system facilities and services. The findings and conclusions documented in this report are a result of the creation of a detailed chronology of events, a literature search, and interviews of key personnel involved in transportation operations decision-making for four events: [1] New York City, September 11, 2001, terrorist attack ; [2] Washington, D.C., September 11, 2001, terrorist attack ; [3] Baltimore, Maryland, July 18, 2001, rail tunnel fire ; [4] Northridge, California, January 17, 1994, earthquake

Passenger train emergency systems: review of egress variables and egress simulation models, final report by Stephanie H Markos( )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Abstract: Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations are intended to ensure the safe, timely, and effective evacuation of intercity and commuter rail passengers when necessary during passenger train emergencies. Although it is recognized that during the majority of emergency scenarios, it is much safer for passengers to remain on the train, it may be necessary for passengers and crew to evacuate a passenger train quickly, due to certain life-threatening conditions (e.g., fire). FRA is sponsoring a research program to investigate a variety of emergency evacuation concepts, strategies, and techniques for applicability to passenger trains operating in the United States. One aspect of the FRA research program is directed at evaluating the potential applicability to passenger trains of performance-based criteria specifying minimum necessary evacuation times. No methodology currently exists for evaluating the passenger rail car emergency egress system as a whole, or the effects on egress times of failures within this system. However, with certain refinements to existing egress computer model calculations, time-based egress models could have potential applicability to passenger rail cars. This report presents the results of a review of passenger rail car egress variables and evaluation of the potential application of computer models that simulate egress for developing passenger train evacuation times."--Rept. doc. p
