Submarine mass movements are a hidden geohazard with large destructive potential for submarine installations and coastal areas. This hazard and associated risk is growing in proportion with increasing population of coastal urban agglomerations, industrial infrastructure, and coastal tourism. Also, the intensified use of the seafloor for natural resource production, and deep sea cables constitutes an increasing risk. Submarine slides may alter the coastline and bear a high tsunamogenic potential. There is a potential link of submarine mass wasting with climate change, as submarine landslides can uncover and release large amounts greenhouse gases, mainly methane, that are now stored in marine sediments. The factors that govern the stability of submarine slopes against failure, the processes that lead to slope collapses and the collapse processes by themselves need to be better understood in order to foresee and prepare society for potentially hazardous events. This book volume consists of a collection of cutting edge scientific research by international experts in the field, covering geological, geophysical, engineering and environmental aspects of submarine slope failures. The focus is on understanding the full spectrum of challenges presented by this major coastal and offshore geohazard

This thesis comprises investigations in petrography, thermometry and geochemistry of the Austroalpine units between Inn Valley and Kitzbühel. The objective of this research is on the differentiation of the Greywacke Zone and the Innsbruck Quartz Phyllite and their metamorphic imprints. The author analysed 43 samples of low grade metasediments by microtectonics, geochemical analysis of white mica (REM/EDX) and Raman spectroscopy of organic matter in rocks (RSCM thermometry). The major units can not be clearly differentiated due to their common boundary. There is a transition zone in which the deformation increases and the nappe boundary could not be verified and is to be questioned. The application of the RSCM thermometry provides the evidence of three metamorphisms (M1 - M3). The oldest one (M1) is limited to the Innsbruck Quartz Phyllite Zone with temperatures close to 600 °C. The cretaceous overprint shows temperatures in the range from 400 - 500 °C (M2). The youngest event (M3) indicates a Miocene tempering (220 - 320 °C). The geochemical signatures present a non-adjusted chemical equilibrium during M2 under emphasised pressures and a suggested lowest position of 32 km

Formation and segregation of melts during deformation an approach with analogue material by Marcus Lang( )

Zusammenfassung: Field evidence from natural partial molten systems like migmatites indicate a close relationship between melt segregation and deformation. To study this phenomena we conducted experiments with rock analogues consisting of mixtures of LiNO3 and KNO3 as a melting component and crushed baryte featuring as a non-melting framework. Four sets of experiments with strain rates from 1x10E-5 s-1 to 5x10E-4 s-1 at melt contents between 4.4 , 8.8 , 17.7 and 26.6 have been conducted. Hot isostatically pressed cylindrical samples of 35 mm diameter and approximately 60 mm height have been sintered and uni-axially deformed at 133.5°C to axial strains of 30-50 with instantaneous record of strength. With this setup we enable an efficient voluminous melt segregation in three dimensions.The chosen material is scaled to simulate the melt movement of granitic melts with a viscosity of 3.6x10E+7 Pa s and strain rates of 1.1x10E-10 s-1 in a framework with grain sizes and melt fractions similar to those in nature. Measured strengths are 10E-3 the natural constraint strength of partially molten rocks. Longest experiment duration scale to 100 years in nature.Bulk strength decreases with low strain rate and high melt content without a rapid decrease at critical melt contents asinferred from literature (Arzi, 1978). At higher melt fractions samples started to harden which was interpreted as the effect of segregation which in turn lead to hardening of the melt depleted areas.Polished sections and statistical analysis of the spatial melt distribution and melt area proportion added to the understanding of segregational features. Efficient melt segregation is initiated at melt fraction higher than 4.3, where below this limit melt sticks in interstitial pore and can not accumulate. Lower strain rates and the development of favorable structures such as shear zone further increase the efficiency of melt segregation
