The purpose of the research was to evaluate various test methods for obtaining a measure of resistance to debonding of asphaltic concrete. The work was done in two phases. Phase 1 was involved principally with laboratory prepared specimens and Phase 2 with the changes in susceptibility to debonding of pavement cores as the pavement increased in service time. In Phase 1, the test methods were the immersion -compression, the University's double-punch, and a modified Lottman split-cylinder. The treatment included portland cement, lime, silane, BA-2000, and increasing the sand equivalent value. In Phase 2, the plant mixtures and cores from surfaces containing no treatment, BA-2000, and portland cement were evaluated with the immersion-compression test, the double-punch method, and the Tunnicliff split-cylinder procedure

The purpose of the work reported was to investigate test procedures for bond extension tests for pavement crack fillers. A review of existing physical tests for crack fillers indicated a need for other than the standard AASHTO Test T187 and modifications made by researchers to the standard method. Two devices were built to test joints or cracks filled with sealants that have been used to keep water from entering a pavement system through surface cracks. Asphaltic concrete beams 12 x 5 x 3 inches in dimension were grooved and broken, and the grooves filled with sealants to serve as test specimens. The bonded beams were strained with two modes; one, under continuous elongation of the filler until failure occurred, and two, under a repeated tensile-compressive deformation until the joint was failed. Variables to the tests included temperature, dimensions of the groove, and amount of repeated deformation. Test results did not show a particular trend for the slow extensibility as affected by the ratio of width/depth (shape factor) of the joint. The extensibility at 32 degrees was generally less than at 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Some fairly good correlations were found between applied strain and the logarithm of repetitions of the repeated strain to cause failure. A method is suggested for setting specification values for sealants tested with the new methods. Continued experimentation with the repeated loading device would require a stronger (stiffer) construction for tests carried out at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (A)

A laboratory study was performed for the evaluation of an apparatus constructed to investigate the behavior of asphaltic concrete specimens subjected to repeated flexural deformations. The apparatus, called a deflectometer, was constructed to test flat circular specimens approximately 17 1/2 inches in diameter. The specimen under test was fixed about its periphery, a uniformly distributed pressure acted on the bottom surface to give the specimen a measured amount of support, and a repeated load which varied sinusoidally in magnitude with respect to time was applied to a centrally located area on the top surface of the specimen. The following is a list of loading variables that can be achieved with the apparatus: 1. Frequency of loading 2. Maximum amplitude of load applied 3. Ratio of maximum to minimum load applied 4. Ratio of load area to specimen area 5. Load contact pressure 6. Specimen support pressure. A standard loading condition was established for the purpose of studying various specimen characteristics with respect to their contributions to the ability of specimens to resist the effects of repetitive loads. The effects of specimen characteristics were compared on the basis of number of load applications to cause failure of a specimen. The study indicated that the endurance of asphaltic concrete to repeated loads cam be correlated with the following items: 1. Asphalt content of mixture 2. Asphalt consistency 3. Surface texture of aggregate 4. Stress or strain imposed on the specimen in consideration of (a) specimen thickness (b) support given the specimen (c) load contact pressure Through the course of the study a mixture compaction method was developed to produce adequate density and particle orientation in the large test specimens. The compaction method utilized the testing machine to impart vibratory-kneading forces to the mixture being compacted. The compaction forces contained horizontal components which are believed necessary in order to tumble the particles and aid in obtaining proper densification of the specimen
