In aiuto della famiglia arriva, scendendo dal cielo, la baby-sitter magica Mary Poppins, decisa a riportare un po' di armonia e di ordine nella famiglia. Con i due bambini i suoi sistemi ottengono subito uno straordinario successo: con "un poco di zucchero" Mary Poppins sa rendere divertente anche il riordinare la stanza e le passeggiate al parco diventano veri e propri viaggi dell'immaginazione grazie alle sue magie; in compagnia del fido vagabondo Bert (un giorno musicista, l'altro pittore, l'altro ancora spazzacamino) Jane e Michael esplorano un nuovo modo di giocare e di volare con la fantasia. Questi metodi strampalati insospettiscono il signor Banks che, per riordinare un po' le cose, decide di portare i figlioletti a trascorrere una giornata nella banca in cui lavora. I due bambini sono mortificati e vorrebbero fare qualcosa per il padre che sta per essere licenziato. Banks, tuttavia, è ormai convinto dallo stile di vita di Mary Poppins e dopo aver ricevuto i consigli dello spazzacamino Bert, si reca in ufficio consapevole di dover essere licenziato ma con il cuore leggero di chi ha capito che le cose importanti sono ben altre. La mattina dopo è un uomo radicalmente diverso, tanto da portare tutta la famiglia al parco dopo aver aggiustato l'aquilone dei due bambini.
