Dopo molte esitazioni e menzogne Humbert è costretto ad avvertire la ragazza della morte sfortunata della madre. La scena si sposta alcuni mesi dopo. Lolita partecipa alle attività teatrali della sua nuova scuola, e allo stesso tempo frequenta un altro uomo. In preda alla gelosia Humbert Humbert decide di lasciare l'Ohio. La coppia, attraversando gli Stati Uniti in macchina, si accorge di essere seguita da uno sconosciuto. Il viaggio spossante finisce per recare malanno alla ragazza, che è costretta a ricoverarsi in ospedale. Quando Humbert la viene a prendere, scopra che Lolita è scappata con un altro uomo. Quattro anni dopo la ragazza scrive una lettera al patrigno: aspetta un bambino e ha bisogno di soldi. Humbert va a farle visita e lei confessa di aver frequentato da sempre Clare Quilty, lo stesso che misteriosamente li seguiva durante il viaggio. Disperato Humbert lascia Lolita dopo averle consegnato molto denaro e va ad uccidere Quilty.
