Come ogni anno, ci sono le audizioni per selezionare futuri ballerini, cantanti, attori, musicisti. Tra i mille volti che appaiono in scena ci sono quelli di Leroy, un ragazzo di colore analfabeta, ma dalle grandi doti di ballerino, Coco, meticcia e di umili origini, aspirante cantante, Bruno, figlio di un tassista di origine italiana, e amante della musica digitale, Doris, complessata ragazzina ebrea con una madre ossessiva, Ralph, eccentrico portoricano intento dal mattino alla sera a far ridere gli altri e a stare al centro dell'attenzione ed infine il timido Montgomery, già in analisi nonostante la giovane età. Entrati a far parte della scuola, i ragazzi si accorgono che il loro percorso di formazione è arduo e difficile. Tra di loro si intrecciano le prime relazioni amorose come tra Doris e Ralph, tra Bruno e Coco o tra Leroy e l'aristocratica Lisa), scoppiano i problemi nelle rispettive famiglie (una sorellina di Ralph viene violentata, sia Doris che Bruno fanno fatica a sopportare i genitori carichi d'amore ma anche tremendamente assillanti) o con gli insegnanti (Leroy con l'insegnante di lettere che pretende di vincere il suo analfabetismo, Bruno con il professore di musica che cerca di fargli passare l'amore per la musica classica e non solo per quella tecno). I quattro anni della scuola passano in fretta, tra provini, festosi e rutilanti discese per le strade di New York, lezioni di scuola e lezioni di vita. Ma affacciarsi al mondo dello spettacolo non è facile. Chi lo fa rimane scottato: come Ralph abbagliato dal mito dell'attore comico o Coco che va ad un provino di un presunto regista ed è costretta a spogliarsi. Lo spettacolo di fine anno consegnerà al mondo ragazzi maturati ma ancora inesperti. Se poi raggiungeranno la sospirata fama, questo non è dato sapere

Una giornalista americana si reca ad intervistare un inglese, Guy Bennett, piuttosto anziano, spia dell'Unione Sovietica Interrogato sui motivi che lo condussero ad abbandonare la Gran Bretagna e a ripudiare gli agi della sua condizione altoborghese, Bennett, in flashback, rievoca gli anni trascorsi, durante la giovinezza, in un duro collegio, assieme ad altri rampolli di famiglie facoltose come la sua. Ci troviamo negli anni Trenta. Nel collegio frequentato da Guy, i convittori sono divisi in una rigorosa scala gerarchica, alla cui sommità sta l'oligarchia degli "dei", gli studenti più anziani, che esercitano il loro trasversale potere Guy ambisce a far parte di tale élite; il suo amico Judd, invece, non ne è attratto, e preferisce dedicarsi, di nascosto, alla lettura dei testi di Marx e Lenin. Un professore sorprende due studenti, Martineau e Robbins, in atteggiamento intimo: Martineau si suicida impiccandosi. Gli "dei" lavorano per smorzare lo scandalo; uno di essi, Delahay, suggerisce a Guy di essere, da quel momento, più discreto: Guy, infatti, è omosessuale, e in passato ha avuto relazioni con vari studenti, tra cui lo stesso Delahay. Bennett, però, ha un temperamento ribelle, e al pari dell'amico Judd, mal sopporta l'indirizzo repressivo vigente nel collegio. Intreccia, quindi, una relazione col coetaneo James Harcourt, senza curarsi troppo di nasconderla. Quando un suo messaggio inviato a James è intercettato da Fowler, uno studente dagli atteggiamenti militareschi molto vicino agli "dei", questi ultimi puniscono Guy infliggendogli dolorose vergate e gli negano la possibilità di far parte, un giorno, della loro élite. Disperato, il ragazzo conferma a Judd di essere omosessuale e di amare sinceramente James: pur essendo comunista convinto e di aperte vedute, Judd sembra non capire del tutto l'amico. Il flashback si conclude: alcune didascalie, prima dei titoli di coda, ci informano che Bennett si è rifugiato in Russia nel 1955, e che Judd è morto nel 1937 combattendo per i Repubblicani nella guerra civile spagnola
