One of the most important artists to emerge in the last quarter century was Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989), whose bold photographs left a strong impression on society and culture. Known primarily for his refined aesthetic, Mapplethorpe created classical portraits, nudes, and still lifes that helped redefine photography as an art form at a time when the medium was floundering. Mapplethorpe's controversial sex pictures -- blunt images of sadomasochism and live "play"--Were simultaneously condemned and revered during Mapplethorpe's life, and later became the center of debate over public funding for the arts, censorship, and the First Amendment. Pictures., a book created in collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, presents for the first time the full range of these sexual images, which many critics believe to be the artist's most inspired work. This book is a tribute to Robert Mapplethorpe's daring vision and his enduring legacy. Edited and designed by Dimitri Levas, with text by Ingrid Sischy, Pictures. dispenses with the intellectual, political, and religious rhetoric surrounding earlier debates, allowing the photographs to speak on their own terms
Pistils by Robert Mapplethorpe( )

5 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 330 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Robert Mapplethorpe began taking photographs in the 1970s with a Polaroid camera given to him by a friend. When he died in 1989 of AIDS, at the age of forty-two, he was considered one of the most important photographers of his generation, having gained a reputation as the avatar of a rigorous formalism stunningly wed to graphic and sometimes controversial subject matter. Most of Robert Mapplethorpe's days began in the early afternoon, often by photographing flowers. Mapplethorpe used them to help focus his vision, centering and warming up for his commercial portrait work. The flowers also helped him to effect the transition to the more daring work, which he executed late at night. Pistils reproduces 120 of these ravishing images of flowers, many of which have never been published. The full range of Mapplethorpe's virtuosity is displayed here--early Polaroids: exacting still lifes in black-and-white and color; and extremely rare, toned gravure prints. Not since Georgia O'Keeffe has an artist looked at flowers with as developed an eye as Robert Mapplethorpe. In them he discovered sex, death, redemption, and, always, beauty. These photographs go far beyond decorative allure to place him firmly in the pantheon of the photographic masters

Mapplethorpe flora : the complete flowers by Mark Holborn( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 42 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Robert Mapplethrope (1946-1989) is one of the twentieth century's most important artists, known for his groundbreaking and provocative work. He studied painting, drawing and sculpture in Brooklyn in the 1960s and started taking photographs when he acquired a Polaroid camera, in 1970. Beginning in 1973 and until his death in 1989, Mapplethorpe explored the flower with extraordinary dedication, using a range of photographic processes -- from Polaroids to dye-transfer color works. In carefully constructed compositions, he captured roses, orchids, snapdragons, daisies, tulips and other species - both common and rare -- and forever transformed the way we perceive a classic and familiar subject. The result -- a stunning body of work -- is collected in this elegant book, Mapplethorpe Flora: The Complete Flowers."--Publisher's website
