Technology transfer for the ozone layer : lessons for climate change by Stephen O Andersen( Book )

2 editions published between 2007 and 2017 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book tells how the Montreal Protocol, the most successful global environment agreement so far, stimulated the development and worldwide transfer of technologies to protect the ozone layer. Technology transfer is the crux of the 230 international environmental treaties and is essential to fighting climate change. While debate rages about obstacles to technology transfer, until now there has been no comprehensive assessment of what actually works to remove the obstacles." "The authors assess over 1000 technology transfer projects funded undre the Montreal Protocol's Multilateral Fund and the Global Environment Facility, and identify lessons that can be applied to technology transfer for climate change."--Jacket

Conserving biodiversity in arid regions : best practices in developing nations by John Lemons( Book )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The overall goal of this book is to increase the size of and more widely disseminate the "portfolio" of research and other works aimed at protecting and sustainably utilizing biodiversity of global significance in arid and semiarid areas in developing nations. Specifically, the book focuses on best practices and lessons learnt for science, for public policy and management, for increasing the participation of local people in decision making, and for enhancing partnerships and capacity building between institutions. In part, the successful practices and programs described in this book are a follow up to the Earth Summit Conference and the ratification of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD) and, hence, provide examples of understudied measures by Southern nations to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity
India, the U.S. and the World Bank( Visual )

3 editions published between 2002 and 2010 in English and held by 129 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With mounting public pressure to change the way international development is shaped by agencies like The World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) was created to fund projects "at the cutting edge of conservation." This documentary examines one such project in southern India, to the USA, where the GEF works from inside The World Bank. We learn the Bengal Tiger is heading for extinction, and villagers claim the GEF project forced them off their land with inadequate compensation. Tempers flare as The World Bank is accused of "treating forests as their fiefdoms." With 2.5 billion dollars to spend The World Bank's green aid unit looks promising on paper. But does it live up to its own rhetoric?"--Container

Air pollution during growth : accounting for governance and vulnerability by Kirk Hamilton( )

4 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The authors find that weak governance and geographic vulnerability alone can account for the crisis levels of air pollution in many developing country cities. When these factors are combined with income and population effects, the authors have a sufficient explanation for the fact that some cities already have air quality comparable to levels in OECD urban areas. To summarize, their results suggest that the maxim "grow first, clean up later" is too simplistic. Appropriate urban growth strategies can steer development toward cities with lower geographic vulnerability, and governance reform can reduce air pollution significantly, long before countries reach middle-income status. This paper--a joint product of the Infrastructure and Environment Team, Development Research Group, the Environment Department, and the Global Environment Facility--is part of a larger effort in the Bank to understand governance and pollution"--World Bank web site
