In-stand versus roadside stroke delimbing : a case study of two harvesting systems by Robin Richardson( Book )

4 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Describes a study conducted to compare the operational and biological implications of mechanized tree-length versus full-tree harvesting systems using stroke delimbers at the stump and at roadside respectively. The study area was a red spruce/balsam fir forest in Nova Scotia, and was subdivided into separate blocks for in-stand delimbing and mechanical full-tree operations. Time studies were carried out on the same feller-buncher, skidder, and stroke delimber working in both the full-tree and tree-length operations. Results are presented from the operational time studies and machine costing estimates, as well as characteristics of the red spruce and balsam fir regeneration, and the site conditions after harvest, at the study sites

Distribution of biomass and nutrients in some New Brunswick forest stands : possible implications of whole-tree harvesting by S.M Maliondo( Book )

3 editions published in 1990 in English and French and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Whole-tree harvesting (the removal of all above-stump tree components from the logging site, also referred to as intensive harvesting) is an increasingly common practice in the Maritimes, but there is little quantitative information on its effects on long-term site productivity. This study reports on biomass and nutrient content in both above-ground components and forest floors of 25 forest stands in N.B. These stands comprise 8 commercially important tree species growing naturally in different parts of the province. As the effects of tree harvesting on site productivity may be site specific, stands of each species were sampled on different site qualities as estimated in the field. The data reported constitute part of a larger study

Maintaining excellence : a guide to maintenance management for independent woods contractors in the maritimes by H. J Clapp( Book )

4 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document is an illustrated guide for small independent forestry contractors in the Maritime Provinces to help them manage the maintenance of their equipment. The first section examines the management of maintenance, focusing on operators and contractors as the most valuable maintenance resource. The second section covers maintenance infrastructure and the factors that contractors must consider when putting a maintenance infrastructure in place. Section three describes procedures for preventive maintenance, strategies for troubleshooting and repairing problems, and solving maintenance problems by learning from past mistakes and by modifying equipment to suit requirements. Other sections cover scheduled servicing, record keeping (including a review of software suitable for small forestry contractors), and the environmental aspects of maintenance

A Selection index with desired gains to rogue Jack pine seedling seed orchards by Maritimes Forest Research Centre( Book )

2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jack pine is second only to black spruce in importance as a reforestation species in New Brunswick. A program for jack pine, based on available genetic and biological information, was initiated in 1977. This report describes the results of jack pine family tests at 4 locations in New Brunswick at age 10 for height, diameter, volume, stem straightness, branch characteristics, and wood density

Establishing criteria for acceptable natural conifer regeneration in northeastern New Brunswick : study establishment report( Book )

2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Forest managers in New Brunswick have shown a renewed interest in the management of natural conifer regeneration. One requirement in the management of natural balsam fir and spruce regeneration is an assessment method to determine the acceptability of such seedlings. This paper documents the experimental design, methodology, and establishment of a 5-year study whose objective is to relate damage characteristics of natural advance balsam fir and spruce regeneration to survival and growth in recent cutovers in northeastern New Brunswick. The purpose of this study is to develop a decision key for the assessment of balsam fir and spruce natural regeneration for survival, growth, and crop tree potential in routine surveys done on recent cultures
Forest pest conditions in the Maritimes in 1988 by Canada( Book )

2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report reviews the status of forest insects and diseases in the Maritimes Region in 1988 and forecasts conditions for 1989 when appropriate. Economically important pests of current concern are discussed in some detail and other organisms are listed in tabular form. A separate chapter discusses the various special involvements with related activities, such as the use of pheromones as survey tools and the Acid Rain National Early Warning System. A list of forest pest related publications and reports is included
