VOICES TO BE HEARD( )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

My work serves a purpose. I have a desire to build things, as most of my pieces show, to lift people up, to redeem people and to redeem materials. My work captures the aspects of life that I feel need to be highlighted, whether those be hardships, turmoils, conflicts, boldness or civility. Pieces have explored the Syrian refugee crisis, the US/Iraq war, persecution of religious groups, US elections, and faith-based ideas such as Holy Communion and the Ten Commandments. I want my work to inject emotion and possibly even change in my viewer. I have toiled over these aspects of life and society that are concerning, meaningful, or just overwhelming and I want the viewer to have the opportunity to grapple with these ideas as well
Collector of Nothing Good( )

1 edition published in 2011 in Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

My work stems from a fascination with our reactions, both mentally and physically, to ideas of stress and anxiety. Referencing interviews and conversations gathered from others as well as my own experiences with stress my work creates a dialogue for these often-unrecognized occurrences. Each of my pieces is a conglomeration of several different ideas of stress. Often during conversations and interviews it becomes apparent that bases of tension cross paths between multiple individuals. This paper will discuss the work presented in my thesis exhibition as well as the ways that the work is initially created through the interview process
Rural Decay Almanac( )

Rural Decay Almanac is an exhibition comprised of sculptural objects and video/sound documentation. The following is an explanation of inspiration and personal history, a proposed schematic/manual for the objects in the gallery, and other contemporary artists I frame myself within. The front half of The Art Gallery at the University of Maryland as well as the atrium space directly outside the gallery hosts the work: four large scale Site-Responsive sculptural objects, and one video/sound loop projection. The library of materials comes from a farm site in Ijamsville, MD which has been re-purposed into the structures. As a sister work, the process of dismantling documentation is shown alongside the objects in a sound/video installation. The gallery space is transformed into a meticulously controlled environment via hard objects, sound, light, and video
OPERATOR ADVANCES INTO BRUSH AT FULL THROTTLE( )

1 edition published in 2020 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

I am compelled by the underlying conflicts that feed conditions into the contemporary landscape. Conflicts stemming absurdities such as abuse and neglect by fostering a false sense of disconnect into the sedentary individual. Structures of power, progression and control are hegemony framed as ideology that demands a mass and momentum; Like sedatives, dulling cognizant intuition, codified rhetoric is seductively buried into objects, digital feeds, and other means. This pulls the individual away from the reality of the world, creating a false landscape and redesigning individual habitus to align with a given narrative, or purpose, outside of the self. As these conflicts evolve in broad strokes through society into conditions, I am compelled to look beneath the surface, distilling the foundational corruption that I perceive. My work collides with and disrupts this momentary intersection, where objects and other processes, imbued with the language of society, are apprehended by individual intuition

Ghost and Demons( )

1 edition published in 2006 in Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

I distinctly remember when, as a child, I abruptly realized my parents were not superheroes--that they could not always protect me. Suddenly the world was a dangerous place where the adults had lost control. During the day, walking home from school I imagined criminals everywhere, while at night ghosts, aliens and demons came out to feed. The feeling that the world is hostile remains with me now as an adult. Although many of the things I worried about as a child were based on fiction my obsessions remain. Ghosts and demons have been replaced by a host of very real and complex, factual nightmares. We are all engaged in a network of competing forces that we, as individuals, have no control over. My artwork addresses my anxieties and obsessions. It is a small act of resistance against an overwhelming and complicated world. Art making is the tool I employ to isolate and articulate the larger systems at work that I perceive as problematic and terrifying. The work addresses forces outside my control that I can only communicate upon through the use of irony, sarcasm and humor. Hidden under clean lines and symmetrical form, I mock the world at large, the viewer and me. Somehow, the process of being ridiculous makes the world a better place

TUCK YOUR BOOTS IN( )

1 edition published in 2013 in Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This thesis discusses my labor experiences and the acquired skills that have been an influential part of my art making process. Developing my own technique and ways of working are very important to me. By nature, I am driven to acquire as many skills as possible. Skills are valuable. It is the desire of still wanting more that has led me to make art
