Human progress and the rising South by United Nations Development Programme( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The twenty-first century is witnessing a profound shift in global dynamics of unprecedented speed and scale, driven by the fast-rising powers of the developing world. What are these countries doing right? What are their biggest challenges in the years ahead? How will this dramatic reshaping of world politics and economics affect the wealthy industrial North, as well as the poorest nations now clustered at the bottom of the Human Development Index? UNDP's widely praised 2013 Human Development Report, The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World, addresses these questions by analysing more than forty countries in the developing world that have posted unusually rapid human development gains in recent decades, drawing heavily on background research commissioned from eminent economists, demographers and social scientists. This companion volume to the 2013 Human Development Report presents nine of those research papers."--Publisher website

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The paper investigates the differing projections for forced migration over the next 50 years, discusses the problem of prediction and analyzes the development implications of large-scale migration. The paper sets out three broad scenarios, based on differing emissions forecasts, for what we might expect. These range from the best case scenario where serious emissions reductions happen and a "Marshall Plan" for adaptation is put in place, to the "business as usual" scenario, where the large-scale migration foreseen by the most gloomy analysts comes true, or is exceeded
Sustaining human progress reducing vulnerabilities and building resilience by Khalid Malik( )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

More than 200 million people a year, most of them in developing countries, are affected by natural disasters. The number of people displaced by conflict or persecution--45 million by the end of 2012--is the highest in 18 years. Economic setbacks threaten to undermine social gains even in advanced industrialized societies. And in addition to bringing many benefits, globalization has also conveyed new vulnerabilities: Shocks in one part of the world can spread rapidly, impacting people's lives everywhere. This Report highlights the need for both promoting people's choices and protecting human development achievements. It stresses the importance of identifying and addressing persistent vulnerabilities by building resilience and enhancing people's capability to cope with shocks--financial, natural or otherwise. Although almost everyone is likely to feel vulnerable at some point in life, some individuals and groups are systematically worse off. Almost 1.5 billion people are multidimensionally poor, with overlapping deprivations in health, education and living standards. And close to 800 million people are vulnerable to falling back into poverty when setbacks occur. This Report focuses on the people at greatest risk and on key underlying drivers of vulnerability. It analyses structural causes--social marginalization, position in society and insufficient public services--and pays attention to the different vulnerabilities faced at different stages of the life cycle
