Bike boys, drag queens & superstars : avant-garde, mass culture, and gay identities in the 1960s underground cinema by
Juan Antonio Suárez(
)
19 editions published between 1996 and 1999 in English and held by 2,253 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
At the confluence of experimental art and the gay subculture of early 1960s New York, Juan Suárez discovers a postmodern, gay-influenced aesthetic that "recycles" popular culture. Filmmakers Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, and Andy Warhol epitomize this sensibility, combining the influences of European avant-garde movements, comic books, rock 'n' roll, camp, film cults, drag performances, fashion, and urban street cultures

Culture, space, and power : blurred lines(
)
3 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 510 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Culture, Space, and Power: Blurred Lines collects chapters that study contemporary mutations of public and private space in multiple cultural contexts and media from a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. The chapters range from the general to the specific. The first section explores how recent trends in globalization, nationalism, city design, and ruralist revival yield particular spatial morphologies. The second part of the volume investigates spaces of privacy and togetherness, including traditional settings for intimacy, such as the home; enclosure, such as the prison ; and the virtual locations created through digital media (cellphones, tablets, and computers). At the same time, despite the two-part division into public and private, this volume stresses their connection and interdependency: the extent, that is, to which broader spatial configurations affect private, day-to-day practices and locations."--Back cover

Pop modernism : noise and the reinvention of the everyday by
Juan Antonio Suárez(
Book
)
10 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Showing that experimental art in the early 20th century was centrally concerned with the reinvention of everyday life, this work demonstrates how modernist writers and artists reworked pop images and sounds, old-fashioned and factory-made objects, city spaces, and the languages and styles of queers and ethnic 'others.'

Contemporary writing and the politics of space : borders, networks, escape lines by
David Walton(
Book
)
7 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This collective volume explores questions of space in contemporary literary texts from a range of theoretical perspectives. In addition to mapping the «spatial turn» in literary and cultural studies, this volume also brings together studies that apply spatial theory to the analysis of literary texts. Contributors tackle a broad range of themes, including how prose fiction addresses spaces of intimacy, abjection, espionage, discipline, madness, post-human identities, post-communist cities, the architecture of dystopia, and coercive medical practices. In turn, these themes open up analysis to key areas within contemporary literary and cultural criticism, including the study of sexuality, politics, power, and identity; the configuration of urban, regional, and national spaces and borders; and the delineation of private and public domains. The contributors reflect on diverse authors from English-speaking cultures and focus on a variety of genres and periods while acknowledging recent research in space studies and offering original contributions to what has now become a thriving field

Alberto Berzosa(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2019 in Spanish and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Avant-garde cinema and mass culture : the 1960s American underground by
Juan Antonio Suárez(
)
5 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This project studies the relations between the avant-garde and mass culture in the context of the American underground cinema of the 1960s, particularly in the work of its three most polemical and influential directors: Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, and Andy Warhol. In contrast to traditional models which postulate a total separation between avant-gardism and the mainstream, this study shows that the avant-garde must be understood in relation to dominant modes of artistic and cultural production

Book
)
3 editions published in 2016 in Spanish and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
