Lightkeeping on the St. Lawrence : the end of an era by Normand Lafrenière( )

4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 1,085 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lightkeeping on the St. Lawrence outlines the history of lightkeeping in the St. Lawrence River and Gulf from its emergence in 1803 until automation replaced the last lightkeeper in 1988. Fog, hidden reefs, rocks, and sandbars have made the waters of the river and gulf among the most treacherous in the world. In the earliest days of lightkeeping in this region, the safety of the mariners had to be weighed against the problem of giving aid to enemy ships. With peace between French and English, safety became the overriding factor and the number of lighthouses, then light pillars and lightships

This work is an updated version of a study published under the same title following the population Censuses of 1991, 1996 and 2001. The text and tables have been adapted to reflect the more complete data from the 2006 Census, in which the usual questions on knowledge of languages, mother tongue, and language spoken "most often" at home are supplemented by a question on languages spoken "regularly" at home, and a two-part question on language use at work, that is, the language used "most often, " and other languages used 'regularly, " in the workplace. This enrichment of the content has allowed us to expand our analysis while remaining true to the initial goal of presenting in a straightfoward manner basic statistics on the country's demolinguistic reality

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Task Force's work was informed by values and principles taught by the Elders. It was inspired by a vision that sees First Nation, Inuit and Métis languages as gifts from the Creator carrying unique and irreplaceable values and spiritual beliefs that allow speakers to relate with their ancestors and to take part in sacred ceremonies. This vision sees the present generation recovering and strengthening the ability to speak these sacred, living languages and passing them on so that the seventh and future generations will be fluent in them. It sees these renewed languages as expressions of First Nation, Inuit and Métis nationhood in a country that has made itself whole by recognizing them in law as the original languages of Canada. This vision sees Canada providing enduring institutional support for First Nation, Inuit and Métis languages and Canadians of all origins, recognizing, sharing and supporting these principles and values"--Executive summary

Languages in Canada : 1996 census by Louise Marmen( Book )

2 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is a collaborative effort between Statistics Canada and Canadian Heritage aimed at providing a general portrait of the linguistic situation in Canada. How has language evolved in Canada since 1951? What factors determine the size of language groups and the tendency of languages to grow or decline? These are two main questions this study on language seeks to answer. The publication examines the change in the size and distribution of the English and French populations as well as the growth and decline of various non-official language populations between 1951 and 1996. It also looks at the increase in the number and percentage of Canadians who speak both official languages as well as the increase in those who speak neither English nor French
