A Brush with animals : Japanese paintings, 1700-1950 by
Kunsthal Rotterdam(
Book
)
9 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 286 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"A British with Animals gives an overview of Japanese animal painting, covering some 250 years, with an emphasis on works by artists of the naturalistic Shijo School. It illustrates the variety of animals that figure in Japanese iconography, including the 12 animals of the zodiac and many mythological creatures. The reader is thus taken on a tour through the animal kingdom, which is profusely illustrated with no less than 300 colour images. A selection of essays explains in great detail the stories and legends behind the animal imagery and provides background information on the practical aspects and social context of Japanese hanging scroll paintings. A useful tool for the collector and a delight for anyone sensitive to the beauty of Japanese art."--Jacket

Considering Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture : what is OMA by
Rem Koolhaas(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"What is OMA provides a clear insight into the role and significance of Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Authors of international repute from beyond the province of architecture examine OMA's work in the light of social and economic developments. The many facets of Koolhaas come under review: his take on architectural theory and the conceptual apparatus he employs, his vision of urbanism and the contemporary city, the designs put into practice by OMA and the research projects of the AMO think tank, which exist outside the immediate boundaries of architecture. This book paints an intelligent picture of the sheer range of OMA's architecture and of Koolhaas's seminal role in the architectural world."--Jacket

Sweet & salt : water and the Dutch by
Tracy Metz(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Water management runs in the blood of the Dutch. Draining the Netherlands and keeping it dry is a process they started centuries ago and continue to this day. But will this still suffice? In the project Sweet & Salt (book and exhibition) author and journalist Tracy Metz and curator Maartje van den Heuvel demonstrate, in text and images, how the Netherlands shapes its evolving relationship with water. The sea level is rising, rivers are swelling, there is more rain, there are more storms and sometimes there's a drought. There is a growing awareness that not just dikes and dams but natural processes too play a significant role in our security. This is the greatest challenge currently facing Dutch designers. There is also increasing attention given to the aesthetics of the water landscape being designed

Philippe Halsman : astonish me! by
Philippe Halsman(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Salvador Dalí's flamboyant mustache, Richard Nixon jumping in the West Wing, Grace Kelly's amazing profile--these are just a few of the images that achieved iconic status and helped make photographer Philippe Halsman an icon in his own right. Comprising hundreds of photographs and insightful accompanying texts, this volume explores Halsman's oeuvre in a variety of aspects. It examines his early career exhibiting works at the avant-garde La Pleiade Gallery in Paris; his experiments with portraiture, particularly the series of stunning images of Marilyn Monroe and his more than 100 covers for Life magazine; his pictures of the contemporary art scene that include famous dancers, movie stars, stage actors, and musicians and the birth of his "jumpology" concept; and his unique, 30-year collaboration with Salvador Dalí, including a book devoted entirely to the artist's mustache

Nara by
Yoshitomo Nara(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 107 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Follow the trajectory of Yoshitomo Nara, one of the most prominent contemporary artists, whose work has grown in complexity and nuance over the past three decades. Thirty years after Yoshitomo Nara rocketed to fame with his paintings of sinister figures, the artist has developed his practice to reflect his unique, empathic eye. This book presents the full range of Nara's work. Along with his most recognizable pieces, such as his ubiquitous portraits of wide-eyed figures on monochromatic backgrounds, readers will discover his earliest paintings, sketched on surfaces ranging from envelopes to cardboard made during his time in Germany, as well as an installation that re-creates his drawing studio. His most recent works are also represented, including his large-scale bronze and ceramic figurines and portraits made following the 2011 earthquake that devastated Japan. Comparing and contrasting these pieces through Nara's distinctive musical lens, the catalogue also features "liner notes" written by the artist about various albums in his personal collection, published in English for the first time. Viewers will see the evolution of a dynamic artist who has become more contemplative with age." -- Publisher's description
