"In this film, 'Her' refers to both Paris, the character of Juliette Janson and the actress playing her, Marina Vlady. The film is a kind of dramatised documentary, illustrating and exaggerating the emotionless lives of characters in the new Paris of the 60s, where commercialism mocks families getting by on small incomes, where prostitution is a moneyspinning option, and where people are coldly resigned and immune to the human nightmares of Vietnam, and impending Atomic war". Les cousins( Visual )

2 editions published in 2011 in French and held by 319 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Claude Chabrol crafts a sly moral fable about a provincial boy who comes to live with his sophisticated bohemian cousin in Paris. Through these seeming opposites, Chabrol conjures a darkly comic character study that questions notions of good and evil, love and jealousy, and success in the modern world. A mirror image of Le beau Serge, Les cousins recasts that film's stars, Jean-Claude Brialy and Gérard Blain, in startlingly reversed roles"--Container
Once upon a time in America by Adrian Martin( Book )

11 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and held by 286 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Counter Sergio Leone, maestro of the spaghetti Western, spent sixteen years developing what was to be his final work--the gangster epic Once Upon a Time in America (1983). This "testament film" has a special place in Leone's oeuvre because it marries the directors typically flamboyant, expressionistic style to a story full of profound melancholy and regret. Tracing the lives of a gang of Jewish hoods from their childhood in the New York streets of the 1920s, through Prohibition and union racketeering, to the 1960s, Once Upon a Time in America centers on the relationship between Noodles (Robert De Niro) and Max (James Woods)--an intense friendship destroyed by time, the shifting tides of political history, and mutual betrayal. As well as detailing the film's genesis, its production history, and its different versions, this study considers Once Upon a Time in America in the context of Leone's evolution as a grand cinema stylist. It illuminates his themes, his method, and his aesthetic, and judges his enormous impact upon subsequent generations of filmmakers the world over
Movie mutations : the changing face of world cinephilia( Book )

16 editions published between 2003 and 2009 in English and Spanish and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, formula-driven Hollywood blockbusters and bottom-line accounting seem to dominate the film world. In times like these can "the love of cinema" still flourish? This book shows that contemporary cinema--from Tawian and Iran to Brazil and the Baltic states--is, in fact, stunningly varied and rich. As Jonathan Rosenbaum and Adrian Martin show in this wide-ranging look at World Cinema, directors like Abbas Kiarostami, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Tsai Ming-liang are now making extraordinary films equal to the great classics, previously unrecognized works from the past are being discovered, and new boundaries for the genre are being explored. Those who follow and share such work, as contributors from around the world demonstrate in these pages, are forming new communities that enable significant exchange between cultures at a time when other forces seem bent on keeping them isolated. Movie Mutations pronounces the art form alive, well, and continuing to developing in new and exciting directions

Mise en scène and film style : from classical Hollywood to new media art by Adrian Martin( Book )

12 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 258 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Styles of filmmaking have changed greatly from the classical Hollywood system, with its emphasis on narrative and character, to the current digital era of YouTube and installation art, where audiovisual spectacle takes command. The ways in which film critics and scholars have analysed these transformations in film style have also often changed. This book explores two central style concepts from the history of audiovisual criticism and theory, mise en scène and dispositif, to illuminate a wide range of film and new media examples. It argues that we need an open, inclusive and truly international approach to understand anew both old and current film and media works"--

Último día cada día: y otro escrito sobre cine y filosofía by Adrian Martin( )

1 edition published in 2013 in Undetermined and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2015 in Undetermined and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Publicado originalmente como Last Day Every Day: Figural Thinking from Auerbach and Kracauer to Agamben and Brenez, em 2012, por Dead Letter Office, uma série da editora punctum books. Les cousins by Claude Chabrol( Visual )

3 editions published between 2008 and 2013 in French and English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Simple, good-hearted country cousin Charles comes to study at the Sorbonne in Paris where he stays at the luxury apartment of Paul, his cynical city cousin. Charles works hard but fails his exams, Paul doesn't but passes and gets Charles's girl. Chabrol's second feature film re-unites Jean-Claude Brialy and Gerard Blain, the two lead actors from his debut feature, 'Le Beau Serge'. Paul (Brialy) is a hedonistic and confident Parisian student living in his uncle's fashionable inner city flat. He spends his time drinking, carousing, sleeping with a variety of female friends and playing the role of matchmaker for his friends, arranging trysts in an ongoing merry go round of bed partners. He is an emotionally remote and decadent man, adhering to a dubious moral code, who approaches his friends love lives with devilish detachment. Charles (Blain) is his naive country cousin, a dedicated student, who stays with Paul whilst studying for his law exams. When Charles is introduced to Paul's swinging set, he instantaneously falls for Florence, a beautiful woman who is intrigued by Charles' innocence. Paul is perturbed as he observes the attraction between the two and the respect that Charles displays for Florence. A clash is inevitable as the rivalry for Florences affection grows. The contrast between the two main characters morality is acute, especially in their attitudes toward women. A dramatic study of class conflict and personal responsibility 'Les Cousins' is a riveting and perverse study of decadent Parisian student life. The City of Lights is captured by Decae's camera as if seen through the amazed eyes of Charles. The film won the Best Film award at the Berlin Film Festival in 1959. Also available on 16mm
