The bicycle thief = ladri di biciclette by Vittorio De Sica( Visual )

30 editions published between 1948 and 2015 in Italian and English and held by 2,342 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The BICYCLE THIEF is Everyman's search for dignity--it is as though the soul of a man had been filmed. The BICYCLE THIEF is about a man, a worker, who must have a bike in order to work at his job. He is desperate, pawns everything to regain his machine, goes to work, has the thing stolen from him while his back is turned, and then goes on a search through Rome to find it. That is about all there is to it. But it happens to be very close to a lyrical masterpiece. And it is is not because we see Rome as it is, or poor people, or rags. It is because these actual details are organized by a humane view of life. The film is unafraid to examine openly, straightforwardly, the terrible distorted destructive world which Man has made for himself

In 1941 three men walked out of the Himalayas into India. They has survived a 4,000 mile walk to freedom. While there is disagreement on whether or not this is a true story, this film is a textbook example of the "man vs. Nature-red-in-tooth-and-claw" survival film. Janusz, a Polish prisoner of war, is forced to sign a false confession and shipped off to Siberia to rot in the most brutal prison system in the world--the Gulag. In prison, he meets a renowned Russian actor, an American architect, and a hardened Russian gangster. Janusz convinces six of his fellows to accompany him in an escape, which improbably succeeds, and then the real trial begins--a punishing race against the elements, time, hunger, and fear

Encounters at the end of the world( Visual )

13 editions published between 2008 and 2017 in English and held by 1,218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This film, like many from director Werner Herzog, is a poem of oddness and beauty. Investigating the lives of the "professional dreamers" who conduct research at the bottom of the world in Antarctica, he finds a happily cynical lot, who regard climate change and the potential extinction of Homo sapiens in rather a different light than most people. They study penguins, seals, volcanoes, miniscule underwater creatures, and the shifting ice patterns. In this harsh yet beautiful place, where compasses are useless, and the climate is negative 70 degrees Fahrenheit, Herzog finds the scenery splendid, and McMurdo Station research center repellent. For viewers who have wondered why anyone would go to Antarctica, Herzog's film provides some interesting answers, and many scenes capturing the natural beauty of the ice continent
