As the bellringer, Quasimodo, Lon Chaney is a marvel of makeup and nonverbal expression, shuffling through the streets of medieval Paris, communing with the cathedral gargoyles, dutifully suffering the lash and humiliation for a crime committed against another, expressing a heart-rending love for a beautiful gypsy who naively sees only a cruel military officer as the heroic ideal. An estate agent's clerk (von Wangenheim) leaves his bride (Schroeder) in the city of Bremen to conduct business in the distant Carpathian mountains, with an eccentric client named Graf Orlok (Schreck). However, the closer he gets to his destination, the more terrified become the people he meets. What he finds at Orlok's sinister castle is more horrifying than he could possibly have imagined ... This was the very first film to be based on Bram Stoker's now infamous novel "Dracula". Names and locations were changed but Stoker's estate, who had not given permission for the novel to be filmed, recognised the obvious and alarming similarities and sued the producers. An English judge ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed and the original negative burned. Fortunately for us, prints survived in Germany
